Once I was so hungry that I sunk my teeth
through flaking paint into a cross braced beam
on the George Washington Bridge
Plugged in like a tick
to the electric blood of the Earth
and would not release
til tranqulized by helicopter
Now I wonder what works of engineers
I did devour in some predatory sleep
To fill my stomach so heavy with iron picks
That were the bones of progress
