What's your favorite Bernhard novel and which one would you recommend?
I've hated Frost but I loved Woodcutters. In retrospect I like Corrections very much but that book really fucked me up and I had to stop reading halfway through, I'm going to read it again soon

I havent read Frost yet what did you hate about it? It is tough to choose a favorite since Bernhard is really consistent with the quality of the stuff he puts out. I have read most of his oeuvre but those are the four novels that I own by him so I guess I will just so I enjoyed reading those four the most.

I havent read Frost yet what did you hate about it? I heard it was like The Magic Mountain.
It is tough to choose a favorite since Bernhard is really consistent with the quality of the stuff he puts out he is not the type of writer to have a so called magnum opus since everytbing by him is great. I have read most of his oeuvre but those are the four novels that I own by him so I guess I will just say I enjoyed reading those four the most.

Dude I’m jealous. I’ve read two novels of his. I try to keep it varied so read different authors but all I want now is to get back to reading Bernhard.

Wasn't he just another boomer-minded idiot whose main concern was "hate speech"? This is what his wikipedia page tells me

In the Finnish wikipedia page there is a big chapter on how people were accusing him of fighting "wind mills" because "tolerance" already won "hate", but now that "hate speech" has become more and more common in Europe and the US, his works have become even more important than ever before. I know this is probably bullshit, but I don't want to pick up an author whose philosophy revolves around these kinds of banal subjects. There is a high possibility that this academic who is cited in the article is an idiot, because most finnish academics are, but is there any truth to what he is saying?

I stopped reading Woodcutters after +-25%. Does it get better after that? I just didn't find it to be witty enough to be compelling.
