Why is reading books from greek and roman times so difficult? Am I just a brainlet or does it come with practice?

You're use to reading things that were purposely designed to monetize your attention. You have been conditioned on clickbait, reading actual literature is essentially breaking that conditioning. Expect it to be painful.

This absolutely. I remember when I first read some Guénon, literally had no fucking clue what he was talking about, so I backtracked back to the Republic, kind of dragged through it but understood it more and more as I read on.

Always start with Plato, trust me, read Plato before reading any other philosopher. Then perhaps read Aristotle, then perhaps Hegel, Hobbes, Nietzsche and so on.

i have the republic and im most of the way through it but honestly can barely remember what i've read.

This seems accurate

I think the solution is likely to start it again.

Try with The Odyssey, Daphnis and Chloe, Oedipous Rex, Antigone, Argonautica, Plato's Apologia, Ovid's Metamorphoses, some annotated Catullus and The Aeneid. They are very entry level but at the same time they're all masterfully written.

Republic is not where you want to start. Its not where Plato would have you start. Try tackling the Apology.

Start with Euthyphro then go to Apology
