I'm pretty old, a good way to explain this is that philosophers and writers from older eras did not have the codified notions of conservative and liberal that we know today in the American parlance, or really the Left/Right divide in general as everyone else knows it.

Marx for example rightly despised homosexuals and negroes. Hitler had a pretty soft stance on women's rights and support for single mothers. Andrew Jackson hated banks AND injuns. And God, read anything that Huey Long ever said.

It is only in this modern era that ideology has divided every single issue into a hardline political position, deviation from which is heretical.
