What do other anons think of Dante and his masterpiece? What did you get out of it? Do you think it's place in literary history is deserved and why so?

Unironically interested in your (detailed) thoughts

I liked the game and the anime, too much context sensitive information and references for me to progress through the canto's. I assume a significant amount of info is lost in translation.

One idea I'm really interested in is eternal life through stories and literature. Many people in hell tell Dante to share their story so they can live on.

Also reminds me of that pixar movie desu

Is this what eternal life is really about, doing something so great that people talk about it forever?

I also like that Dante starts by feeling sympathetic towards them and then begins to view the punishments as justified. I think adults go through that as they mature. Teens and young adults are often hyper sensitive about being offensive or "being mean" but later you achieve a better balance and realize niceness isn't kindness, and silly things shouldn't stop you from achieving your goals.

I haven't read it in a long time. I would be interested in revisiting.

His position (one foot in the Middle Ages and one foot in the Renaissance) is probably the zenith of our civilization creatively and morally, and it is one we should seek to revive.

The smoke belief that something can be greater than the individual human life to the extent that eternal punishment is more than justified is the antidote to our modern sickness. The humanism that developed in Dante’s wake is an affront to him.

I just admire the way such an attitude flies in the face of systems of morality which centralize the oppression of individuals rather than the plans of something greater. Those systems seem to make up the entirety of today’s acceptable thought.
