It gets much easier after the first chapter. It drops all the names of the characters early on, but unlike Pynchon, it doesn't introduce very many afterward. Will Kohler, his wife, parents, mad meg (his professor from when he went to school in nazi germany) and his current university colleagues compromise 90% of the plot. Also don't worry too much about the weird uses of textboxes and such. Sometimes they have meaning, and sometimes they just represent Kohler's frustrations with the book.
