So all I have right now is:
Inside Mr Enderby
Notes From Underground (Quasi-wizard since he has to pay to get sex)

Anything else, preferably depressing (and where the main character shoulders a large chunk of the blame for his predicament BUT cannot be completely blamed for it).

The foundation of western occultism, this one you will definitely need to have read.
The others, while important works(in particular the hermeticum), don't "have" to be read, but should be.
I would recommend you to work through Kraigs's Modern magick. It will get you started. >>13628981

There was a wizard I was following a while back, whose path to improve life didn't get him anywhere. All he became was /fit/. Didn't get any friends or a gf. He had sex with a hooker and he regretted it.

Of course one has to take account of his own actions but not everybody has the same panorama. In a simmilar thread somebody posted a pic discussing how social scheme works as capital and I guess he was right. If you have already gained some capital since birth your life will be easier, capital attracts capital, but if you were neglected as a child you'll have to deal with a handicap later in your life. What can somebody as OP do? Talk to strangers in some park like a total freak?
