the consensus seems to be that unless you're incredibly confident that you'll be able to get into a top school and be top of your class in that school, then it is likely not worth it

Become an accountant instead.
Job right after college, good starting salary. Don't need to go to a insanely expensive school to get a CPA.

> The median annual wage for accountants and auditors was $70,500 in May 2018. The median wage is the wage at which half the workers in an occupation earned more than that amount and half earned less. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $43,650, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $122,840.

Not him but there is too much flexibility in accounting to completely automate it. And how are you going to automate auditing?
Finance is a pretty broad field, it's not all trading. You also have private equity and investment banking.

Nothing will be completely automated. But law, finance, accounting, will get automated enough to make it a lot harder to find work in these fields because all the entry-level busy work will be performed by computers.

$43k is one hell of a low bar, anon. That's what I make right now and I'm continuously appalled and researching job changes, further schooling, etc. at all hours. Almost any amount of education (intelligently selected) will push you over that pay.
