"magical realist" or "surrealist".
Comprehension failure.

I don't think OP meant them as synonymous, just as an either/or.

Back on topic, I guess. Here's an interesting-looking book:

I haven't read it yet, but it's arriving in a couple of days. Reviews sound promising.

HEY GUYS, HOW ABOUT WE RECOMMEND SOME MAGICAL REALISM INSTEAD OF ARGUING ABOUT WHICH TRIPFAG IS WORST?

Here's just a couple of my favourites for you OP:
Angela Carter - "Nights at the Circus"
Angela Carter - "The Infernal Desire Machines of Dr. Hoffman" (This one is more surrealist than magical realist but you did say that's what you wanted)
Salman Rushdie - "Midnight's Children"
Marquez - "The Autumn of the Patriarch"
Luke Sutherland - "Venus as a Boy"
Borges - Just about anything he ever wrote.

Any of those will make for good reading, but Angela Carter and Borges are the big ones. If you're not familiar with these authors then you should fix that ASAP.

Yeah, I did--I think that became the subject of new controversy when Crabwalk came out....relevance?

I think of A Passage to India and Mrs. Dalloway as "magical realist", though I don't think they're generally considered to be. Anyone agree with me there? I think that impression of mine comes down to one or two key scenes in each work, but to me, that's enough--a dash of the magical or inexplicable, but not enough to make it the focus, and thus make the novel "fantasy".

this is a good list.
I might add Carter's The Bloody Chamber to this too.

surrealism is a 1930s movement drawing on "dream logic" fashionable since Freud. Realism are those 19th century novels more about the society than about the individual. they are usually much more boring and less farcical than real life gets at times. NOW the fuck is 'magical realism'!?

The problem with Carter is that she's not very good.
