how do you write a book or even an essay when you only get inspired in short intervals - any ideas flourishing in your head gone the next day, replaced by new ones, or, if written down, just the carcass of some earlier rumination - how do you maintain the flow?

Inspiration is a meme.
Don't be a slave of your attention span: once You're committed to writing something see It done, don't wait for the whims of your neurochemistry.
What I do is that i keep a notebook of ideas and when i decide I want to develop one of them i remove all distraction untill It's done.
