Some people are in love with some other people
life, ambition, etc mean they can not be together
some go marry some other folk and are miserable
some chose to be alone instead of settle
some set out in the world to prove themselves and win their love
old loves meet back up by chance/fate/design
things get complicated
everyone starts lying
everything gets worse
even more complications
Some lives are ruined, some find happiness, some die.

Moral of the story, be true to yourself and never lie.

Beautiful summary.

James is not really plot driven, you just let yourself get caught up in the story, find a few characters to identify with and go on an emotional roller coaster. In the end he is just a well written soap opera, the more of yourself you are willing to invest into it, the more you will get out of it. He is fun from time to time.

But I forgot to mention pride.

He also helped usher in subjectivity, which is the only kind of lit I can read now adays...in fact, I won’t even bother talking to a person if they have no notion of the inner world.

>meandering
Last word I'd use to describe his plotting

>subjectivity
If it was not for that his books would be under 100 pages long, he does well at showing his characters views, he can have 30 characters each tell their perspective of the same event and keep it from being repetitive. Not sure if anyone has done that as well as he did, you never feel like you are rehashing events.

>>13592864
I would say there is an meandering quality to him, it is not a bad thing though.

I think Faulkner learned a lot from him, that trick of not describing the Big Plot Event directly, but having various detailed descriptions of its psychological impact on different characters instead

Always felt James is getting the effects of modernist style novels but having to do it the long way round by using conventional 19th century prose

Nah, he was firmly rooted in realism, if you start from the beginning you can see how he develops fairly clearly. While he experimented a fair amount, he never left realism.

He wasn’t “getting the effects” he was creating it, another link in the chain leading to a new species
