It's really not that funny, it's more absurd than anything else, and any humor is really dated. Ignatius isn't a particularly likeable character, either, he's an obnoxious pseudointellectual prick who isn't even funny in the "unsympathetic comedy protagonist" way.

I think a lot of it goes over the heads of people who don't like it. It is absurd and Ignatius isn't meant to be likable. You'll appreciate it more if you're initiated into scholastic thought.

It can be enraging if you pay attention to some of the characters. The mother is a truly awful person but she's never portrayed that way. If you're not reading between the lines you may end up coming away thinking she's a victim or somebody to sympathize with.
