I muscled my way through Prelude to Foundation a few years ago, and it was worse than having my dick snapped in half. I have a few weeks to kill before I travel, is the original Foundation worth my time? I'm a general sci-fi fan but couldn't get into Asimov beyond a few short stories after that book.

Oh man, I'm really sorry you read Prelude first. I ALWAYS read in publication order...you're more likely to see where a series jumped the shark.

Foundation is phenomenally influential in SF, and has a lot of really neat ideas in it. I liked it very much, though I have to admit a more recent (third?) reading was kind of slow going...as you'll have noticed, Asimov is not a great prose stylist. But if "epic SF story" is what you're after, the Foundation Trilogy should definitely be on your list to try out.

tl;dr, It's worth reading 100 pages to see if it hooks you.
