Because even if you are the Kig Kahuna
You are merely flesh and bones, being feed by the fires of evolution. And as such, the hunger and primal fear never go away.

The idea of a ascended man stems from that. It doesn't matter if its the 1800s gift wrapping, Buddha's fasting. Or whatever.
Its still the same idea: Either overcome the hunger, supress it, deny it, and do mystical bullshit in hope that it won't taint your next life.
