No since superheroes and classical heroes work in different ways for different purposes
And the latter ones are good, so there

I never know what to do with this shit. My friend who's a Computer Science fuck texted me the other day and said "You ever think about how the Inferno is just fanfiction, and the Iliad is just comic books?" Like what do you say to that? You don't wanna be a cunt and lecture him. I always just say shit like "Yeah, it's craazy."

If they're your friend then you shouldn't be afraid to tell them off and be honest. That's just a superficial acquaintance you feel you need to maintain appearances for.

This is a bit of an oversimplification, but a significant part of why quality has declined is because we don't really have snobs anymore. Not that you have to be a dick about it, but how is someone without experience going to know there's a difference? If they don't know there's a difference, why would they ever bother trying to read Inferno or the Iliad? It's "importance" is not enough. Part of developing taste is taking on the responsibility to help other people have better taste. That's more true in the market economy than ever before. If you know better, it's kind of cruel to let someone to essentially kick themselves in the literary balls.

What bothers me is how liberally people throw around the word "friend" these days. How is someone your friend but you can't even voice an opposing opinion to them for whatever reason. That's like shit you do to your annoying co-workers who don't understand anything.

>> No.13568507

What does friend mean? Isn't it just someone who hasn't majorly betrayed you and you have conversations with. Ideally you share some interests with him.

>> No.13568534

>>13568507
I don't know, friend means something more deep to me. Someone you can genuinely always confide in without having to walk on eggshells around them about anything, let alone some ancient poem. If you think "sounding like a cunt" over explaining iliad of all fucking things is enough to threaten a friendship to the point you avoid giving an actual opinion, then it inevitably won't last. Why would you call a relationship that fragile a "friendship"

I mean in this case it shouldn't be a big deal, but sometimes people are relatively good to hang out with but might go psycho and full retard if you bring up certain opinions.

I wouldn't call em friends, I'd call them acquaintances. Friendships shouldn't be dissolved that easily.

A lot of superhero stuff, both intentionally and unintentionally, is directly based on the heroes of Greek mythology. If you look at the early comics of the 40s you can find a lot of them are about all the old gods and heroes.

I wouldn't claim otherwise. The value of comics is in how they use the medium.

Sure, but it's the difference between creating a piece of media for sale, with the strange subcultures/identities that emerge from it and a story that explains the metaphysical nature of the Greek world and the mythology/values that underpinned their entire culture (entirely outside of a cynical profit motive)

>> No.13569104

>>13569073
actually the iliad was 'written' with a dominant entertainment motive. homer had to earn his slices of roast mutton and cup of honey-sweet wine

>> No.13569112

>>13568765
i think a lot of that comes from a misunderstanding of the myths. i don't know much about comics but the greeks were very honest about the nature of their gods.
but a lot of western literature in general (obviously) has a basis in greek myths

That's probably Gilgamesh though.

Perhaps, but still outside of the profit motive. It reflected the hegemonic mythological values of Iron-Age Greece, not a mere meme made up by some dude. People were sacrificing, etc. and constructing their modes of life around these deities and the values represented in them. Very different than what Marvel is, though I fear that that disparity is being closed and people are building a worldview or lens to interpret the world through this childish media. Scary thought in my mind.
