To become an author is not all that hard. To write well, is not all that hard. To write something really good, the type of stuff that people read for decades, perhaps even centuries. that is an incredible task.

Constant reading and then writing and then more reading and writing

You have to constantly be reading the authors that inspire you, and writing down everything you can. Do this for years and years, and at the end you might publish something worth reading, but it's also possible you just don't have an affinity for it and you never make anything worth your time. that's kind of the gamble you make trying to be an author.

Becoming an author is easy: write something. Writing well is impossible, so write badly.

How do I get inspiration? The last couple of days I sat in front of a blank word document for an hour and didn't know what to write about.

Never do that. If it isn't coming to you, do something else. Form the idea in your mind what you want to do and then create an outline as to where the story is headed.
