Is it best to read the New Testament in order or is there a recommended reading plan?

You can start with John's gospel then you can read the rest of the New Testament in any order.

Why John instead of Matthew?

It’s fine to read in order, that’s how I read it for the first time

John emphasizes a lot of Christology (meaning, understanding the nature of Christ), so some say it’s the best to start with. I think it makes no difference if you live in a Christian culture and have some understanding (even through osmosis) of who Jesus is. I’d only say John first to somebody who really just knew nothing about Christianity at all
That’s just my opinion though, someone else may have a better argument in favor of that order
I will say, despite my view on reading order, I do think John is my favorite book of all the Bible, I find I return to it the most. The farewell discourse (chapters 14-16) makes me legitimately tear up

this anon gets it

john wrote his gospels for the people who didn't understand Christ
