How do people get the determination to write long-ass books? I struggle to motivate myself to keep up with basic hygiene.

Gym is not enough. You must create a routine for everything. Hygiene, self education, general development of environment, etc.
Even if you do not need money, get a job. It will cultivate a routine you need. It will teach you responsibility. It will create a social network for you.
I can write a whole essay on how to be better, but none of it will matter if you don't WANT it. You need to really want to be better. Otherwise you will never commit to anything.
