NRSV is objectively the best English translation of the Bible. That is all.

Why does /lit/ always seem to insist there is only one good translation of a work of literature? NRSV and KJV both have their merits. NRSV is favored by scholars and is the most accurate, but KJV is the most poetic/literary and is essential reading for anyone who cares about Western literature. You should read both, the same way you should read Homer translated by both Lattimore and Pope.

World English Bible

I saw in my vision by night, and, behold, the four winds of the sky broke out on the great sea.
3 Four great animals came up from the sea, different from one another.
4 “The first was like a lion, and had eagle’s wings. I watched until its wings were plucked, and it was lifted up from the earth, and made to stand on two feet as a man. A man’s heart was given to it.
5 “Behold, there was another animal, a second, like a bear. It was raised up on one side, and three ribs were in its mouth between its teeth. They said this to it: ‘Arise! Devour much flesh!’
6 “After this I saw, and behold, another, like a leopard, which had on its back four wings of a bird. The animal also had four heads; and dominion was given to it.
7 “After this I saw in the night visions, and, behold, there was a fourth animal, awesome and powerful, and exceedingly strong. It had great iron teeth. It devoured and broke in pieces, and stamped the residue with its feet. It was different from all the animals that were before it. It had ten horns.
8 “I considered the horns, and behold, there came up among them another horn, a little one, before which three of the first horns were plucked up by the roots: and behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking great things.
9 “I watched until thrones were placed,
and one who was ancient of days sat.
His clothing was white as snow,
and the hair of his head like pure wool.
His throne was fiery flames,
and its wheels burning fire.
10 A fiery stream issued and came out from before him.
Thousands of thousands ministered to him.
Ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him.
The judgment was set.
The books were opened.

it's not /lit/, it's just monolingual americans, precisely the people with the smallest authority when it comes to translations.
Just see, every translation discussion is always about translators like Fagles, those you mentioned, P&V for the russians, Longfellow for the Divine Comedy...

>>13542855
>In the preface to the NRSV Bruce Metzger wrote for the committee that “many in the churches have become sensitive to the danger of linguistic sexism arising from the inherent bias of the English language towards the masculine gender, a bias that in the case of the Bible has often restricted or obscured the meaning of the original text”.[2] The RSV observed the older convention of using masculine nouns in a gender-neutral sense (e.g. "man" instead of "person"), and in some cases used a masculine word where the source language used a neuter word. This move has been widely criticised by some, including within the Catholic Church, and continues to be a point of contention today. The NRSV by contrast adopted a policy of inclusiveness in gender language.[2] According to Metzger, “The mandates from the Division specified that, in references to men and women, masculine-oriented language should be eliminated as far as this can be done without altering passages that reflect the historical situation of ancient patriarchal culture.

if you like actual literature, not fantasy or scifi, it fucking is relevant to you, because every great author in history knew the bible inside out ass backwards, and many, many of them were strongly influenced by it directly or indirectly. Quite a few of the most told, and most widely known stories of humanity are in the bible.

I'm unsure what you are asking, like as lit or as moral guidance? I just said it is important lit. But most of it is as crazy sounding as the myths of any other primitive tribe of people, with as bizarre of morals. The saying of Jesus can seem wise, especially with the right commentaries/interpretation, but his miracles are kind of weak sauce. Like how the only magic Gandalf really does is make his staff light up.

Take your head out of your ass and witness the entirety of 'Western Culture' - post Constantine 99% of western thought is a reaction to or against the Bible. Most of your deeply rooted beliefs come from traditions centered in the Bible (e.g. even noticed how close the idea of 'White Privilege' is to 'Original Sin'? - this is an idea of 'modern thought' that mirrors almost identically beliefs first brought out by Biblical scholars).

It is the foundation implicit or explicit for our system of morals and ethics...

Do you hold such apathy towards Homer? Refuse to look at Mahabharata and Analects? These are foundational works of entire cultures. How do expect to understand these cultures by ignoring their history?
Which culture do you live in? Is it maybe a western one? Perhaps you should know what it's about? Maybe you believe a bunch of junk that isn't true, things you learnt on the playground like the rumors about sex. I thought the Trojan horse was the Iliad's whole deal, but it's only a paragraph in the Odyssey!
African and native American myths are of even lower quality but, unless you're very /pol/, I doubt you'd be so hateful towards them so I just wonder if you're being honest with yourself about your reasons.

>How do expect to understand these cultures by ignoring their history?
I dont, I dont care about indian cultures or ancient hebrew or even christian culture.
I live in the west, and western culture or any culture frankly doesnt interest me, bible and our culture is simply reflection of western/european character tendencies, its just some cant accept the fact we are born with it so they had to invent god to explain how it all works. This is what bible is therefore if you havent in you the understanding and concept of being helpful person and being able to cooperate with others, then yeah maybe bible is a must read for you.
