Best magic systems are like Avatar. Limited but not systematically so. Of course, this only applies to standard fantasy and its notion of magic. All in all, magic is usually trash.

D&D was a mistake.
Or rather authors reducing magic to roleplay systems with a few digits was a mistake.

Anything by Brandon Sanderson. Mistborn and SLA being the most prominent examples. Characters are obligated to fulfil certain pre-conditions and have very finite, measurable amounts of magic they can use.

Compare this to The Black Company by Glen Cook. Sorcerors are mysterious as fuck and just shoot shit out of their hands like it's nothing. They still have limits and caveats but they are kept secret and safe, away from even the reader's knowledge.

I even hate it in DnD. Magic should have rules but they should be about the sacrifice. The effect should be dynamic based on luck, charisma, will and especially the strength of their faith.

Face it, we'd all be considered high-level wizards if we found ourselves in the past with a smart phone and a handgun (though we'd run out of "spells" eventually).

> Magic should have rules but they should be about the sacrifice.

CRINGE, this is true brainlet tier. Instead of accepting magic you're still trying to "justify" it from a Puritanical hard work standpoint, when in reality the increase in optionality present in a universe where that sacrifice is possible makes such a universe intrinsically "easier" than our own, regardless of the cost to the character.

The "magic should have a cost!" meme is genuinely plebeian.

Or... the sacrifices are put in there as a device so the character won't just spam it to solve everything. It also adds tension.
A character with a gun that only has one bullet left leads to a much more nail biting scenario than if he had a practical infinite amount.

Not a bad point, but in execution it often shows a small-minded character drama mindset where a cost to the character is as significant as a cost to the world at large.

it's best to very sparingly use magic to solve the protagonist's problems
creating them however is a different story
