I cut the leddit and NPR charts. The second fantasy chart still needs fixing, if anyone wants to "fix" it they're welcome to it. I'll get around to it at some point if nobody does.

>>13511529
Decent, it's worth a read. It's a cut above the usual pop fantasy trash churned out by Sanderson and Rothfuss but there's also no point reading past book 1. It goes downhill quite fast after the first one. It can be read as a standalone though.

Are you keeping track of topics used?

Anyway, recently read S. Andrew Swann's Prophets. Sci-fi space faring religions. I was rather conflicted reading it. Not because of the religions. I'm not sure why. I know that I didn't like the ending for sure though, which led to me deciding not to read the 2nd book. Not recommended.

I also happened to recently read several religious alternate history stories in an alternate history anthology. Didn't like any of them.

Religious rec is Yeshua's Dog by Tim Sullivan in the Nov/Dec 2014 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction.

Probably various others for the above, but I don't remember right now.

Condensing it to one homogenized chart per genre (fantasy/sci-fi) would do wonders, i.e., remove redundancies like several charts with the same books. Perhaps add a few more sub-genres like Amazon self-published. I'm sure we can easily solve this shit

Did something like that years ago, although it was people asking for books with dragons and AIs,msentient planets, etc.

>Maybe a "/sffg/ canon".
Yes. The most memed books should be put in a chart that states they are memed books, so people will make their own mind if to read or not.

>Are the rec images just made by one random anon pushing their tastes?
The first two original charts were made by an e/lit/ist fag before this general was even conceived. The others were added on periodically. With exception of the original charts, yes, someone was pushing their tastes. They are still doing so now, telling people to remove books they don't like >>13511554

Even if don't like the wiki, with pages such as, https://4chanlit.fandom.com/wiki/Charts or https://4chanlit.fandom.com/wiki/Recommended_Reading/sub
I think there were other wikis as well, but don't feel like looking at some other stuff at the moment.

anyone here actually read The Wizard Of Oz?

I've finally decided to pick it up and it's got me thinking that the book was actually meant to be a parody of the time's isekai stories

Like, in alice in wonderland, alice falls ass-first into wonderland. In the wizard of oz, dorothy likewise falls ass-first into oz, but she lands on the main villain and kills her instantly. The quest is all pointless, the backup main villain is likewise killed by accident, and the great and powerful wizard turns out to be some schmuck from Nebraska who is himself an isekai protagonists who managed to con an entire fantasy world into thinking he was a sorcerer

just the layers of parody on this are delicious, and the fact that this is treated by the public as a straight fairy tale instead of the turn of the century shrek is ludicrous

The problem with that perspective is that Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass weren't serious stories either. They don't have plots, just random wandering towards vague goals, or antagonists, just things that happen to momentarily obstruct travel. And any semblance of dramatic tension didn't matter because they were both just dreams. Both stories were just frameworks for absurd humor; The Wizard of Oz is actually much more conventionally structured.

The only difference is one has Ancillary Justice and the other has The Quantum Thief.

I don't know if it was updated later to add the former in place or the latter, or if someone was triggered by the former and exchanged it for the latter and posted it the altered version.

i asked this before in a previous thread but i wasn't satisfied with the couple answers. i want to make a story where people eliminated the necessity for gender by being able to create people synthetically- is there a problem with that? for me the problem is the fact that i think personality traits are very tightly connected with gender and if you have a group of genderless people they would be akin to robots

There is a lot of fiction that deals with gender and sex.

Some types:
Everyone is a clone of one person.
Everyone is the same sex.
Everyone is created without any sexual characteristics
Everyone is created without sexual characteristics and then later in life can become one or the other.
Everyone can change everything about themselves at any time.
Everyone has all sexual characteristics at the same time.
Alien race that has entirely different physiology where there's no human analog.
and much else.

The only "problem" with it, as you've said, is with yourself. The only thing you have to decide how and whether these synthetics reproduce and whether they using use the standard human biological model.

There are only two versions, and the later version with Ancillary Justice instead has a "v2" in the corner.

I changed it because while I actually do think that Quantum Thief is better than Ancillary Justice, it is also quite similar (and inferior to) The Golden Age. For better or worse, gender is a major fixation of SF writers in the time period covered by the last row of the chart (basically, post-2000) and Ancillary Justice is the least-retarded example of it that I'm familiar with.

The "crash course" chart isn't intended to be a list of the "best" SF books, but a guide for a relatively new reader to become quickly familiar with major subjects and subgenres starting from the early 20th century to the present.

there's not many desert scifi settings, and I'd argue Dune is more fantasy or sword and planet than scifi.

Personally, I think there's a lot of potential for desert scifi settings, but unfortunately the ideas I come up with would all be better as fantasy stories.

I remember months ago I had an idea for a story about a spice merchant in a decopunk martian colony who unwittingly gets caught up in a drug deal that only gets more complicated when it's revealed the drug in question is actually the nanobots that caused native martian civilization to collapse, sparing only a few nomadic tribes

That might depend Hobbes Postulates that the soul is simply animus, movement, and he notes that in a number of cases when the bible says his soul was taken away or that life was breath into him it meant either the lack of animus or the presnce. one can find a similiar idea in the koran where creatures are lifeless until God breaths life into them and which point they can move about. Going by that rubric Robots as long as they were self animating could be considered as having souls. Of course if the soul is not in fact animus and rather a enternal metaphysical sprite that resides in a fleshy shell(cell) we must first define the function of the soul in its cell(would human being without a soul be the same as one with one or would they lack certain functions) from hence could we extrapolate that a robot possessing all the functions reserved for the human soul must itself posses a soul.

Are there any "slice of life" fantasy books?
You know, no grand adventure, no prophecies or destines. Something like following the life of a blacksmith, farmer or merchant. Like traveling around Talking to people about prices, whats gonna sell, haggle about sales and purchases. Raise kids or be a teacher.
You know the day to day stuff that is basically always cut out in novels.

I'm not a fan of the dark forest theory; it's too pessimistic and doesn't make sense in any case. Any technological civilization that beats you to the galactic stage will be able to completely dominate the galaxy within a few million years at most, and monitor or eliminate every potential life evolving planet. Even if a few intelligent species evolve within the same period of a million years or so, whoever has the lead will be able to spend a fraction of their home system dyson swarm's energy/mass budget to mass produce billions of massive satellites and monitor every star system in the galaxy. Fusion torch drives would be visible from many light years away, and even fission power torches should still be quite visible. Any buildup of lights on the surface of a planet would be detectable, and especially the formation of a dyson swarm would be easily seen. The whole "oh no we better try and hide" thing is nonsense unless your universe actually allows some kind of stealth; which ours seemingly doesn't. Even then it would be better to expand and harvest as much matter/energy as possible ASAP.

Everyone who is interested in such approaches to the Fermi paradox or other things concerning futurism I highly recommend the YouTube channel from Isaac Arthur, he does great and long stuff on a huge array of these topics while staying grounded on our current understanding of physics. Additionally, he oftentimes talks about sci-fi concepts like the dark forest theory from the book of the same name and how bullshit some of these are. Great channel.
I know that Luo Ji is stupid for thinking that, but you know, many things in his trilogy don't make any sense like instantaneous communication between the sophons and the Trisolarians which even quantum physics prohibits. But well, I've never read a sci-fi story that really made completely sense.

Also, Cixin Liu's view on China is pretty much pic related. Not that he has a choice, but still.

Not necessarily. What you have there is, given the political and religious setting, a good blackmail scheme.
Soviet KGB used to use recorded sex with members of the Bolshoi Ballet (both male and female) as blackmail material.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kompromat
"In the 1950s, British civil servant John Vassall was a victim of a gay honey trap operation, producing kompromat which could be used against him since homosexuality was illegal in Britain at the time.[13] During a 1957 visit to Moscow, American journalist Joseph Alsop also fell victim to a gay honey trap operation conducted by the KGB.[14]

In 1997, Valentin Kovalyov [ru] was removed as the Russian Minister of Justice after photographs of him with prostitutes in a sauna controlled by the Solntsevskaya Bratva crime organization were published in a newspaper.[6] In 1999, a video aired with a man resembling Yury Skuratov in bed with two women that later would lead to his dismissal as Prosecutor General of Russia."

It goes on and on.

Apparently they're one and the same. Then seems to have been expanded with the DEGENERATE recs and also some other themes charts. I can't even tell if this a progression or two.

So, Dear Guy Who Is Making A Lot Of Charts, is your "Fantasy Guide" (which includes SF) separate from your "SFFG Suggestions" and your Modern Fantasy Recs V2, or are they a progression in 3 charts? It's difficult to tell because there's so much overlap.

I saw Joe Abercrombie at a book store in London yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my browsing, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen copies of The Blade Itself in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the books and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each book and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

>Gunpowder Mage
Do you mean the Powder Mage series? It's a series that has a lot of jumps in quality both up and down. Book 1 is decent but books 2&3 are pretty mediocre. The novellas in between are great. There's an on going sequel series and it's fantastic. I'd rate the first series a 3/5 just because of the novellas, if you ignore them it's probably a 2/5, the sequel series is 5/5. Overall it's fun but don't expect anything too deep.

>Starship Mage
