Typical dinner murder in a small-ish house/manor story, how would you do it? Have you ever had any ideas on it, would it even be a good story in this day of age?

*ahem*

I would like to first announce that all Negroes are not welcome at the dinner table.
Second, all women in this room are whores and should be treated with contempt.
Third, the Jewish people are hereby banished from this premises.
Finally, all Janitors must meet in the backyard and clean my dogs shit. For free.

That is all.

Frat party. Frat bro gets offed. Extensive look into bro politicking, the lives of Chad and Stacy, hedonistic party culture in the stead of aristocratic manners culture, existential angst hidden underneath superficiality and social media lies. And of course, the bitter incel was behind it all. Think American Psycho meets Brokowski. You will actually have to socially interact with socially competent people for your research. Good luck.

You can go the gimmick route by setting it somewhere odd, like the International Space Station, so that the murder is "impossible!" or some other gimmick.

You can go the subversion route where something unexpected happens.

You can do the adaptation route, where you combine it with something modern (modern politics, modern themes, modern setting of especial depth and verisimilitude) and update it for the current year.

Or you can play it straight and just do it really well.

If I were doing it I'd make it a videogame. The point of detective novels has always been (for me at least) seeing if you can figure out whodunnit before the end of the book. So just narrow in on that.

I was thinking not old, but something US based in the 40/50/60/70/80 or maybe older? But I dont want to do politics because I know very little about politics and think it's super cliche, (would have to stay a little grounded), I like the current year thing though. I'd like to think about that.

The Deed videogame is similar to this, but in that case the player is the murderer and tries to pin it on someone else and ultimately get away with it

the murderer is just a random frenchman passing by, getting blinded by the scorching sun.

Obviously
If he didnt read it, none of the murders would have been commited
