It's non-fiction

>> No.13507226

The ultimate pleb filter for dystopian fiction. Most of the people who read it don’t understand its ideas and leave with a surface level interpretation at best.

predicted modern Chinese government 70 years in advance. narrowly missed out on predicting the rest of the world were it not for Reagan-Thatcher

>> No.13507236

I dug it, although it's essentially a romance novel that occasionally delves into Orwell's (mostly keen) political observations. It is by far the most compelling in the more mysterious first third of the book before he meets Julia "for real," followed by the solid latter-third and then the at-times-decent-but-kind-of-a-drag middle.

It has some problems in the "show, don't tell" department. I mean there's some spot-on shit that Orwell put in that whole part where you get to read part of the manifesto, but I was tempted to just skip that entire section at times.

>> No.13507237

fantastic book, i think people exclusively using it to describe modern forms of totalitarian government (or any form, for that matter) is short sighted and kinda tiring though.

What i find most interesting in the book is the concepts related to newspeak, crimestop etc. I see that stuff everywhere, I spent years trying to get rid of it in myself but I probably failed.

Yeah, I don't have an issue with people taking note of the political relevance it has today, I'm just sick of people seeing a sound byte on the news or whatever and being like 'aw jeez we're in 1984!' with no other discussion or action being taken. It's the same kind of mentality that Orwell wanted to prevent, just idly standing by and making sweeping claims about society with no further discussion/action.

I found the ways in which the society and lack of free will manifested itself within the characters (namely Winston) super interesting.
nice dubs btw

Why does everyone on this board have such insubstantial and cliche opinions?

Ok, if you're posting here, I get it, you're pretentious and probably insecure. So much so that it's gratifying to post your useless opinion anonymously and imagine people taking you seriously.

But goddamn, does anyone have an authentic and substantial opinion about the book?

I've never read it myself.
