Because they're selectively deciding which parts to talk seriously and which parts to disregard based on their own biases. In that sense they are acting more like "products of their time" than the philosopher is. Why not take his ideas seriously and refute them if you think he is wrong?

What are you talking about? If you dismiss Newton's alchemy on the basis that he was a "product of his time" then you are just plain retarded. Normal people examine the evidence for alchemy, find none, and dismiss it on that basis. No intelligent person reads through his writings on alchemy feeling morally repulsed and then pushes them to the back of his mind because he finds them icky. But that's exactly what people do with philosophers and race.
