Understanding death on a physical level opens you to understanding on a spiritual level. If you understand death, something most fear, you can appreciate life. When you appreciate life you see things differently than others. When you see life in such a way what you're able to gain is wisdom, and that can't be tought in a university.

You get some of that of course depending on the professor, but it's really not systematic.
Foreigners have very strange tastes in French authors. They often elevate absolute trash (say people like Foucault and that's not the worst) and consider that the standard French opinion.
In terms of bait topics, I'd say french academia is less 'subversive' than in the US.

what's the point of literature if you have nothing to say?

To be a writter you need to be good at something else than just writting. Intense experiences are valid too. Because you need to write about something. This should be self-evident.

It's really weird, I'm really really bad at math but good in linguistics. I even failed geometry and chemistry in high school. May have something to do with application if I have some sort of stigma toward math from my youth.

I think that's more likely. It was the same for me; not that I went on to study mathematics, but I had to take a few extra courses to qualify for certain university programs (not american). When I actually decided to sit down and study it properly, to approach it as a branch of philosophy rather than as this isolated, boring task, it kinda clicked. I disliked math because I couldn't understand it as instinctively as I could more verbal subjects; and because I didn't grasp it immediately, I neglected it, which prevented me from ever becoming particularly good at it, which in turn made me irritated and even more hostile to it; kind of a negative feedback loop.

Not really. Structuralism is a very good methodology for reading philosophy (I'm thinking Émile Bréhier, Martial Gueroult etc).

Departments founded under heavy french influence ended up producing high quality commentary on modern philosophy

You see every time one of you guys say something that's some A grade advice you fuck it up.

People do care what your interest is not a lot but it throws you into the group of people they know that do the same thing so think about the average person that likes that shit .

Realizing people other spill spaghetti will help you but not much just get use to recognizing what's spaghetti.

Just got my master's in literature. Why do people on this board think that going to university isn't /lit/? At least if someone has a degree you know they are capable of writing a thesis on a book.
