So why all the hubbub about Aquinas? I am just reading about him now (in Copleston) and he seems like your standard Aristotelian. If I don't buy the Aristotelian ontology (meaning, the neo-Aristotelian ontology of the middle ages), why would I care all that much about Aquinas?

Copleston (a Jesuit) even includes some remarks about how fanatical modern neo-Thomists are. His basic assessment seems to be that Aquinas is an interesting thinker, but no more or less interesting than Scotus or even Bonaventure. So why are neo-Thomists so batshit about him?

How do you mean? What is so useful about him?

Not asking to be dismissive, genuinely just always wondered what the big deal is.

Aquinas reconciliation of faith and reason is useful when dealing with people who belive the two are utter opposites.

As to why there is more fanfare over him is probably because not only is he more accessible but he is by far the most comprehensive of all scholastics kind of like Kant is for German idealists

Bonaventure is a wonderful mystic. Scotus has another take on first princples. Copleston is a brainlet. Aquinas' Summa is rising these days because it was written in part as a pastoral aid for priests. This format makes it accessible to the bugmen of 2019. Literally too easy to look up the question you have, find the answer and its possible objections and their refutations.

who, Augustine? I think he's a fucker. Stole heavily from Plotinus and invented such a thing as a just holy war. Totally contrary to Jesus' teaching.
