In the twitter age where people are busy and can't read beyond 400+ page novels or read at all, why isn't the short story more popular? It's the best of both worlds.

Publishing/distributing them is the biggest problem. Magazines have moved on from short fiction and the ones that continue are far too niche.

Novellas are what's going up in popularity the most because ebook readers are less prone to choosing doorstoppers to read that people in bookstores would buy to get their moneys worth. As in they knew they could read it for a long time like over a vacation.
