13472755 No.13472755 [Reply] [Original]

Yesterday was my little brothers eighth birthday so I decided to buy him The Magician's Nephew by C.S Lewis (the first book in The Chronicles of Narnia series).

I walked into the dining room after coming home from the book shop to see him playing Roblox on his tablet. I eagerly present him the book with its very nice graphic of two children riding a flying horse upon a hardback front. Then this little shit, this vile moronic child knocks the book from my hands onto the floor and declares "I hate books". As soon as this happened I was filled with fucking rage, this indoctrinated ungrateful vulgar zoomer just demonstrated such a disgusting attitude towards me.

How will we repair the minds of today's youth /lit/? The scary thing is most children this age have this approach towards reading. The only solution I can see is drastically limiting this generations use of modern technology however organisations will thwart any legal means by which this can be achieved.

Your parents fucked up. It's their fault for letting such toxic and obnoxious artifacts within his reach. There's nothing you can do to save him from the abyss known as internet/smartphone addiction. Your brother is a zombie.

Repair?
Nigh impossible.
Your parents, and you, were supposed to prevent this from happening in the first place.
But his expressed sentiment isn't entirely your fault, it's mostly the fault of a truly terrible education system that works constantly to consistently produce human beings which despise the written word.

>Then if that doesn't work, I'll try to intervene to prevent him doing what he wants to do!!!
Gee, what a recipe for success.

Why not take him to a book store and say "you can pick any book you want"?

Why not read stories to him when it's bed time so you share in fun experiences together?

You are making typical boomer mistakes trying so hard to force it. If you want him to read, you first need to get him to want to read and enjoy books. Associate it with his freedom to choose whatever experience he wants. Associate it with quality time with his loved ones. Don't associate it with you being a retarded tyrant.

It’s your fault for getting him a faggoty looking book. No disrespect to C.S. Lewis but this is a 13 year old zoomer we’re dealing with, he probably doesn’t appreciate the implication of being given children’s books with fairies and unicorns and shit on the cover. Maybe he’d be more open to sci-fi books or something. Failing that, just leave something by Sade lying around in his room...

If he says he doesn’t like books you may want to get him something a little easier like comics. It’s more visually stimulating and you can eventually get him into real books. I bet he doesn’t see comics as books, so it’ll likely be way easier. He’s also a child of the avengers era, so he’ll think iron man and shit is cool. Seems like a tough case to crack.

I have a 3 year old and the house is filled with books. You have to saturate them with books from a young age. Sometimes I will see him on his own just flipping through them - looking at pictures.
He loves books but it took a fair bit of work.

The problem is with the parents my friend. They have chucked a tablet at him when they couldn't be arsed. Its easy. Don't blame thew kids - blame thew fucking parents.

Are you fucking stupid?

>> No.13473513

From his perspective, a book is going to appear far less exciting than a video game. What about taking him to something like indoor rock climbing, an indoor play center, or some parkour classes? His attention span is probably fried from the tablet. He needs something engaging and preferably challenging to ween him off the immediate gratification of electronics.

Considering he is already that insolent, and someone thought it was wise to give him a tablet at eight years old, I'm guessing his attitude is far from his only problem. What's his diet like? Does he have access to the tablet before bed? Is he getting exercise? If your parents aren't going to do their jobs, you're going to have to step in, for your brother's sake.

It might help to make access to his tablet conditional on good behaviour. If he is polite, eats his vegetables, gets good grades or whatever, he gets his good boy points. He can cash them in for various rewards, including time on the tablet. If he is bad, you threaten to take some of his points away, but give him the chance to recover them if he can tell you what he did wrong, give a sincere apology, or is on his best behaviour for some period of time.

Child abuse. They are lucky I don't have dictatorial powers because I would have no mercy on people like that. I would punish them out of all proportion to the actual magnitude of the crime they are committing if only for the sheer amount of rage it elicits in me.

That's the sixth book in the series, even if it's the first chronologically. Also, about the first half of that book doesn't even take place in Narnia, so it really shouldn't be used as an introduction to what Narnia is.

civilization is built on discipline, not on letting people do whatever they want and "discover their interests". That's child abuse. Children don't know what's good for them. You have to tell them or you are being an irresponsible adult. Our world is fucked from lack of responsibility and people doing whatever they want, of only seeking out what pleases them.

Eh, civilization is built on plenty of things anon, and opportunistic retardedness is the most prevalent o them. Advocating discipline without an ethical, moral and spiritual core is a recipe for dangerous stupidity.

Give him 4 tabs of acid. Also, its not your brothers fault he's just become a victim to capitalist machine that has, with the advent of the digital age, made most of the western world vapid hyper consumers.

Best you can do, imo, is to be patient with him and ask him why he doesnt read books. Maybe even tell him that he is going to regret wasting so much of his time looking at a screen and wish his parents had been more aware and caring of whats going on, or atleast been strict with him.

Its not impossible anon, but there is only so much you can do and ultimately its not your responsibility. Your brother will have to learn on his own in the end. Helping him at a young age would ideally be best, so that his brain doesnt cement these particular dopamine patterns and not become fucked in the long run. I wish i had a childs brain rn.
