The Trial - Franz Kafka

What the hell is this? I just finished it and didn’t like it. Why is it on so many lists of ‘must reads’? I read metamorphosis last week and enjoyed it but have no idea why The Trial is valued in any way?

Any insight is appreciated

He created a unique sense of being lost in the gigantic machine that is the beaurocracy, although it could work more generally. The feelings of paranoia, restlessness, fatigue all contribute to the atmosphere, from which the word kafkaesque got its origin.

I get this with Metamorphosis. Was the trial trying to convey paranoia? Or maybe prejudice?

I also found the women in the novel to be pointless. Characters that were hopelessly attracted to K instantly and for no reason

He described the psychological state of the character. Notice how we never know why he's being punished. He's in denial. The corridors are not really small, they are probably of a reasonable architectural height and the trial room wasn't really that crowded, it probably had enough space.

You can read it at as a description of how the system treats the individual, but for me that's just lazy. I despise when people use a book to make an argument against the system/society.

Kafka was a lawyer, he was critiquing the judicial system.

Off topic but I started reading Kafkas America today. Is it just a very grotesque comedy or am I missing something?
