Because people have different things they value in literature. To me it's absolutely impossible to predict if a piece of media is a 10/10 before I consume it.

I've been burned a lot on highly-recommended genre literature. For example, Brian Aldiss' sci fi trilogy about that planet with centuries-long ice ages. Absolutely interminable, he uses technical terms as adjectives where they don't make any sense, such as describing a hill as 'syncline' which means the way the geological layers are oriented, it tells you nothing about what the hill looks like, and will be meaningless to most readers anyway. Each book follows the formula of setting up some big event or mystery, then meandering along with banal characters and ending with the event barely making an appearance. For example, in the first book a huge migration of an alien species is heading towards a human settlement. At the very end of the book some of the characters see some smoke in the distance. The conflict is never described, the fallout from never appears, and the reaction of the characters isn't explored.

Also, the presence of humans on this alien planet is never addressed, aside from some vague reference to them being natives of the planet. So an alien species just happens to have evolved into a perfect copy of an unrelated species. It's not even a Star Wars deal where the humans exist in their own universe without Earth, there are literally humans from Earth who visit the planet, and none of them show the slightest curiosity about the question of why there are humans on an alien planet. I could go an about this shit for ages, like the alien humans being able to contact the dead, which is never explained, it's literally just magic.

Yeah that's the same thing shonentards say about longrunning shonen action series. In actuality these series usually start off bad or start off good and rarely change by much in quality. If a writer you recommend me is supposed to be so great, then why can't he write the first 100 pages to be good too?

That definitely happens to basically every mangaka. But that would be a gradual change. You couldn't point out a place where it "gets good" especially when you're talking about a novelist, rather than a mangaka.

1984 - hated it, hate Orwell, mediocre author

Moby Dick - loved it, greatest piece of literature from the USA

Ulysses - fantastic, pregnant with meaning, a literary maze

Farwell to Arms - mediocre, the army bits, romance meant nothing to me

Lolita - adored it, prose so good it makes you tearful

Pale Fire - cherish it, another great

Blood Meridian - great, second best thing to come out of the USA

The Trial - bored me, dropped it half way, began it again a year later from the top, bored me again to the finish

I've been underwhelmed by a lot of great literature I've read in the last few years, and sometimes I'm VERY disappointed. For example, I thought Fahrenheit 451 was garbage.

But I was blown away by The Picture of Dorian Gray. The only thing I didn't like was the ending. Why do you think it's garbage?

>>13466286
Agree with all of your assessments except for 1984.

And I couldn't agree more about The Trial--mediocre at best.
