Instead of just sitting there, what if he did some crazy acrobatic stuff while burning, or a funny dance, and died doing a handstand, but kept it for hours until melting.

Self-immolation appears the most powerful message created by hominids. It emerges only from an immense measure of suffering, sure, but also a substance of conviction, philosophy and moral development. Of the United States' civilizational achievements, the closest sacrifices we have might be when soldiers embrace certain death in service of their fellow soldiers, but even that is largely something insular and tribal. I don't think Marines leap on a grenade for the sake of home and girlfriend but for their buddies. Whereas those burning monks were sacrificing themselves for something larger than the squad, battalion or corps.

The Arab Spring is said to have commenced by a Tunisian's self-immolation. If someone ever did do such a thing in the United States, it would not be trivial. Whichever part of the establishment refrained from coverage would be purchased by that which indulged our limbic responses to such monumental imagery.

Everyone who followed the news at the times know that. First it was demonstration in Tunisia because that one guy (trained as an engineer irrc) immolated himself after having been humiliated and having had his fruit stand confiscated. From there it spread to the whole country and then the whole Arab world.
