ITT: Kino book covers. If you post a paperback, it better be goddamn spectacular.

I'll start with pic related: Ulysses, Joyce - Limited Editions Club (George Macy). It's the only edition of an illustrated Ulysses that Joyce personally signed.

Don't look up the price unless you want to feel depressed about the fact you won't be able to afford it if you ever manage to find it.

That's a great alternative. Personally, I like Matisse's illustrations more, though the production of Arion (paper, font, general workmanship) is one of the finest of the 20th century. I've heard there are a dozen or so "print-only" copies of the AP Ulysses; they fetch the better part of ten grand on the secondary market. I would love to own it one day.

All that said, I think LEC captures the spirit of Ulysses better with its cover design, though Arion is better in all other ways.

As a fellow Joyce fan, have a look at Folio's LE of Finnegans. I love the dreamscape they've painted.

Pic related is an example of a catalogue raisonné, a complete listing/reproduction of all an artist's works (in a given medium, painting in this case as opposed to drawings, etc). While they're currently fashionable (and spendy) for modern art, the book-concept is simple enough.

This particular one has the great advantage of being accompanied by a series of excellent essays by Anfam, together with his autistic attention to technical detail on provenance, confusion between paintings, etc. He uses fancy ten-dollar words like "recondite" and "jejune" to good effect. Rothko is one of the most easily hated abstract artists, but when you page through the thing you do get the visual sense of how he moved from his little naive portraits with blocky figures, to the squiggly mythological forms, finally to the rectangles.

It's very obviously a frontispiece as opposed to a book cover, and a cursory wiki double-check bears this out before I hit "post".

Printed books of the period didn't typically have fancy covers (if anything at all apart from author-title), but they could readily whip together a nice frontispiece as a print, as in pic related, which would be committed to a page rather than a design incorporated into the much thicker material of a cover itself.

A local used bookstore has a $1600 massive (probably about two and a half feet tall) copy of The Raven illustrated by Gustave Doré from the late 1800s. I never even knew Doré illustrated any Poe, and that bookstore generally sucks dick most of the time - it's one of those places that gets 90% of its revenue from Funko Pops and Harry Potter merchandise. They've only had a "rare books" case for a couple months, and I honestly think they made it specifically because somebody dropped this cool monstrosity off.

All of these were printed in one run in 1884, and Doré died in 1883, so this must've been one of the last sets - if not the very last set - of illustrations he ever did.

Lucky you, anon. Yeah, LEC in the prime years is the gold standard. Each book used letterpress and had individual hand- drawn illustrations (meaning no two books were the same). The book came numbered (the Club always limited printing to 1500) and hand-signed by the artist, as well as sometimes the author.

They don't make 'em like they used to, pal. The HPs are facsimiles of those golden years of fine press. What a wonderful gift from your grandfather. Perhaps you wouldn't mind sharing your collection if you're able?

With the proliferation of smart phones and tablets, online libraries and black market PDFs, literature has become entirely deterritorialized from the physical book-object. Infinite reproducibility of cultural artifacts removes entirely supply from the demand curve, and literature’s physical avatar, the book, stands alienated from its original function, with purely tactile considerations to justify its existence. Over the course of last decade, the material book-object has transformed from the noble and worthy receptacle of cultural transmission to a base and materialistic luxury product, dependent on its cultural prestige to mask the vulgar materialism that now justifies its existence. A hundred years ago book burnings were rightly considered monstrous: today they’re too ridiculously pointless to bother with.

My favorite covers are those ugly pale covers from the 70s and 80s, especially if they've got a pale background, or that tan frame around it, if anybody knows what I'm talking about, and even more if they're creased. Something like this. I have no idea why, but I go absolutely crazy for 'em. I'd unironically choose some tatty covered edition from the 80s than a FS edition without hesitation.

I also like children's books from the 50s.

V translates literally and P edits. People are mad that directly translated Russian, and thus the Russian language itself, doesn't have a poetic cadence to it like Romantic, Latin, Turkic, and Indo-Aryan languages.

Russian is dry. Tolstoy, Bulgakov, Dostoevsky, etc. write drily. The translation, of high fidelity, is dry.

Plain Everyman's classics, and other imprints with a common format that is simple and tasteful, are vastly superior to overwrought, gaudy, tacky, garish covers that look more like a Harry Potter prop, bad graphic design coursework or objet d'art marketed to the kind of people who buy Funko Pops.
You can tell that so many of these aren't meant to because of their frankly ridiculous size or decoration.
