Lord Jim is one of my favorite characters in any book. Nostromo may be a ""better"" book, but OP asked what my favorite was.
All of his books I've read so far are great and imo you can't go wrong with any of them.

As for contemporary stuff, nothing worthwhile currently. If we forget about the Witcher guy and possibly some other genre writers, the most successful living Polish writer is probably Tokarczuk who has lately gained some strong alies (and awards) around Europe, but her ideas bore me to bits — it all seems like just feels and surface-level psychology without any meaningful depth.
In short, should just take the gombropill.
