While I agree these are all very trite and honestly boring most of the time I still think there's something gripping about it.
I'm not really sure how to put it but his way of writing always seems to allude to something bigger and then never delivers.
Like The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle is a book I really really want to love, but I just can't because it's never fully realized. There are so many things that seem connected, but never go further than just seeming - it's essentially intellectual cuckolding. Even then it still sticks with me as something great, regardless of internal contradictions and half-forced incomplete points.

My point is I think his style has some merit if only he'd put more consideration into what he's doing.

I believe what you are describing is exactly the intention: he is alluding to something that isn't present, and you are thus forced to accept the magical realism of his story.

It's the comfiness. His stories are profoundly relaxing.

Also who knows if his translators are doing justice. He's a translator himself who is fluent in English but who wants to translate their own work? It would drive anyone mad.
