Tagore and Holderlin are two of my very favourite poets, among a group of maybe 10 of them. Tagore especially is simply monumental, it's like he was channeling the poetic instinct 24/7

A bunch of my very favorite poets are poets I've only read in translation. I know this is dumb because there are poets I have compared in the original language that I speak with English and the translation really never quite gets it. But I can't not get something incredibly meaningful from the translations anyway, I assume I could get a great deal more if I knew the language because I've seen how it works, but something is better than nothing, and the something is honestly extremely important to me so I can't condemn reading poetry translated wholesale.

Some of the poetry in question is not metred so that element is missing, though the complexities of things like phonetics and the rhythm in any phrase at all are lost. As to meaning, the meaning is altered, maybe garbled, but something is transmitted at least, especially when the poetry has to do especially with images and combinations of ideas that conjure mystic feelings, which is the sort of poetry that I care about most. I am eternally grateful to the people who have translated these poets, they have given me so much.

I do wonder if there are poets from languages I don't understand that I would like if I spoke it but I just don;t get it. For example the French translations of Shakespeare seem to lose absolutely everything of his magic, and the English translations of Pushkin are just terrible. The pushkin at least retains a bit of the ideas, id still like him in English, but I wouldn't love him how I do.
