Why do you never see teenage boys and college-aged guys in suburban libraries? In the summer, college-aged males are in their hometowns and teenage boys have lots of free time. But I feel awkward in the suburban public library because it's full of old people and parents with 5-12 year olds

Oh look, hedonistic monkeys blindly indulging in their hedonistic monkey instincts. I once went through that phase where I thought my parents were embarrassing and wanted to make "friends" but now I realize friends are just glorified strangers and family is everything

It's totally normal to have downtime. Op asks a good question. I have no idea why teenagers don't go into the library. They have so much free time in the summer

God I hate that I had to grow up in the 2010s. This decade is pure cancer. I am so jealous when I hear old people say "these days suck, the 1970s were the best time ever!"

Well i think most young people who read would rather purchase a book and read it at home. Most books are not that expensive and you'd get to read it in the comfort of your own home. Now that libraries are not commonly frequented during childhood very few people would find them appealing. I also imagine that the common young reader are more introverted and socially awkward (if you buy into to that) so it would make sense that not going out to read would be preferable alternative to libraries. Also there are simply too many things you can do at home to pass time like vidya, browsing the internet, movies, TV shows, anime ect, giving very little incentive to kill time at a library But also Niggers

These is very off topic but I've never asked this before: does anyone remember not being able to read or learning to read? I've got a near perfect long term memory but i don't recall learning to read or not already having learnt it. Maybe it's just something we forget so I'm curious if people do remember it and what it felt like.

You hang out on /lit/, which makes you think that young men actually read.

I remember sitting in class, having to trace the letters of words with my finger and pronounce every letter individually. Before that we learned a letter a day or something; the teacher made these real elaborate drawings on the blackboard and linked each letter with an image- such as K for King. It felt really lame, kind of like not understanding a mathematical formula on first glance.

I would have probably been around six y/o.
I also remember being four or five and trying to write by roughly drawing what I thought were letters with crayon. Ofcourse it was just random nonsense, but my kindergarten teacher tried to consolidate me by saying it was some obscure dialect. I was totally convinced that by some occult way I had learned, not just my language, but some other one alien to me. That afternoon, when my mom picked proud little me up from school, I learned what lying was. Lol. Thinking about this brings back some funny memories. I'm from Rotterdam btw.

Wait I thought you learn to read at like 3? We did regular school work at 6 like maths/Science/English/and religious education(catholic school). I don't know much about dutch so maybe that would explain the difference but surely 6 is a bit late?

I could be mistaken, but I checked online and it says that here it's usually between 4-6 y/o. I got held back a year in kindergarten so I figured 6. Also, the school I attended was a Waldorfschool, so it might be a idiosynchronicity related to that.

Do you feel mentally stunted or have you gotten over your early issues entirely? I was an advanced child, so I knew all the colours, could read and write and talk in full sentences by 3. But I also had ADHD so from then to early high school I had terrible to below grades outside of comprehension tests, until i got put on medicine and was pretty good for the rest of school. But i do feel like those early years of shit grades and lower set classes gimped me.

friends are a very valuable thing, one of the most important things that can be created in this world is a true friendship. There is a purity to it that a romantic relationship can never approach(though romance has its own special qualitlies as well of course), it is a beautiful intimate and respectful thing.

The suburban meme sucks since you usually have to drive to get to it. The closest one to my place is about 7-8 kilometers. I usually only go if I need a place to study or do homework at, even then I only do large amounts there. I'm only in the suburbs at my parent's house during the summer. I like going to read there occasionally, if I want to find a book I'll like, but then I go home and pirate the ebook. Also I have a 25$ fine so I can't check it out, and no I'm not going to pay it at this point.
