>if people had my misfortunes they wouldn't be able to handle it
>I don't know what kind of grief other people go through
>they haven't buckled from the weight of it so it can't be that bad

This is irrational thinking. It's very true to life and there are people that go about thinking like this, but it is not logically cogent. I don't think at this point we can identify Dazai as having the same opinion as his character.

>> No.13413641

>>13413631
It is logical. If the vast majority of people are able to continue in life, with enthusiasm for all of its petty concerns like politics, then their problems are negligible. Normie problems do not matter. You can see it in their responses to non-normies, as well, the idea that non-normies should just "buck up and get over it," "go outside and make friends," etc. -- this is just projection; the normie life has no legitimate problems so they project that onto non-normies and thus assume the non-normie is complaining about nothing.

>> No.13413651

>>13413641
Define legitimate problem, how a non-normie has one, and how a normie doesn't.

Yes politics in a first world country are to a certain extent inane, but so is pop culture like literature, music and video games, which plenty of "non-normies" seem obsessed with.

>> No.13413680

>>13413651
If you think the issue is something being "inane," then you don't understand the discussion, presumably because you're a normie.

This is true. Honestly I agree with Dazai. If anyone else lived my life they would have offed themself ages ago or broken down and turned to drugs and got put in a mental institution. Normies have never known suffering. They complain about shit I wouldn't even find more than a mild inconvenience, and act like it's the end of the world. I've suffered incomprehensibly.

Dazai lived not in the time of internet conversation. Now you can browse someone's [website] and get every detail of their lives and thoughts, and we can indeed conclusively say that normies aren't even sentient enough to suffer.

They'll go on and on for DAYS, even MONTHS or YEARS, about something that would rate as a 1/10 on my misery scale. My daily life is a 6 or 7. Most people who I tell too much about myself to are absolutely astounded by the conditions I've survived and the situations I've endured.

I can say without a shadow of a doubt Dazai was absolutely correct on everything. If a normie had my misfortunes they'd start a drug habit within a week and off themselves by the end of the year.

>Political discussion gets a bit heated, but we can all at least agree that the borders need to be opened
>Go back home and get on the internet for a few minutes
>See some people complaining about how they have no social life

Dazai was the opposite of a sociopath. He was overly empathetic and sensitive. He overthought social situations to his own ruin. One time he was trying to keep his friend from getting in a bar fight, so he came up with this joke that fell totally flat, resulting in his friend getting rowdy with him, and then the bartender blamed Dazai and kicked him out for causing trouble.

I can't quite remember what story that was, my guess would be Self Portraits but I'm just not sure now.

Why do posters misunderstand Dazai so badly? He's a tragic sweetiepie.

>> No.13413949

Anyone read F. Exley here? It always strikes me as a Western version of Dazai.

>> No.13414197

I think I might need to re-read it to give an opinion, but the fact that I barely remember much about it other than the basic "plot" of the novel is probably a good reason not to do so.

From what I remember the guy just seemed to be experiencing some kind of derealization/ dissociative symptoms from a young age, but the overly melodramatic language was irksome.
>From the youngest age I have been SUFFERING GREATLY in a way that you cannot understand.
>The GREATEST HELL has always been my home, because I was always different from other people

I loved it, but I strongly recommend reading Osamu Dazai's other works as well. Most of his stuff is written quite differently, and is more uplifting.

Though given that he offed himself, this is probably the one where he showed the most of himself.

I think the stuff in No Longer Human about the protagonist's silly cartoons might have been a metaphor for Dazai's previous literary work.

That actually makes sense, but I enjoy them. Especially as a non-Japanese person, it's really interesting to read those sentimental stories that are heavily shaped by Japanese culture and tradition.

>> No.13414734

Modern japanese literature has a heavy flavor of 19th-20th century european lit though. It is a syncretism, as many parts of japanese culture are. The japanese way of living underwent massive modifications as it became a modern society. A lot of values they held dear related very differently to the modern world compared to Edo, medieval and ancient Japan.

>> No.13414788

Maybe so, but it's still a snapshot into Japanese life in the 19th and early 20th century.
