This is cheating above all else but learning a language similar to your mother tongue and either doing a bit every day or jumping into it in a bipolar way helps, in my experience. It needs to be periodically maintained, of course, for the latter, but it can result in a small degree of awareness, if not full competence. It worked for me, and I imagine if I were to go either course more frequently I'd be able to reach something approaching fluency soon enough. I just don't have time/am lazy.

Buy the Assimil course for the language you want.
You can be at B1 in 3 months with it if you actually put in the effort.
