I am still mad at my 8th grade teacher for giving me a C on an essay she described as college level and ruined my entire fucking weekend.

The prompt was "What did you learn about the holocaust?" And we had read Night and Ann Frank and watched Band of Brothers. I had been getting poor grades in my essays and so my parents made me waste my fucking weekend revising shit over and over when they read it and told me to fix things.

She gave me the C because I just stated the facts and gave a fucking ton of citations about number of deaths, mendel's experiments on twins and those debunked human lamp shades. She also accused me of having my parents write it.

She told me I didn't write that I learned not to descriminate. I told her that she should have fucking expressed that explicitly in the prompt.

Dude we get no fucking critical thinking or explaination on how to interpret books. My English teachers would always tell me to, "Say what you feel about it," when interpreting books. It wasn't until my only male English teacher explained to me, "Just make up an arguement and provide evidence for it," did I fucking get it.

I realize now that the same chicks who couldn't interpret shit in my classical literature and short fiction and film courses in college are the same kind of women that were those awful fucking teachers.

I wrote a 6 page short film in college and my idiot graduate professor couldn't understand my absolutely hamfisted symbolism and I had to send her an explaination essay. The theme was reluctance to trust again in new relationships and I used body armor and guns as symbolism for how distrusting people are in early relationships to love again. It was obvious.

The holocaust isn't an event subjectable to standard historiographical norms. It's a singularly unique moral lesson which transcends contextualization or historical inquiry.
Strangely beginning soon after Israeli military expansionism in the 1960s there began a worldwide campaign to introduce the holocaust into the curriculum of schools to teach children that Jews are the unique victims of a form of persecution that had to be combated in all potential forms. Before this the narrative of the second world war and how it was taught was radically different e.g. this is a textbook intended for high-school students which would probably be much too advanced for even todays college graduates:

World Religions (with no context to the conditions when they were founded) -> Literally the entire Middle Ages lumped into one project -> New World Settlement (Revolutionary War AGAIN) -> French Revolution -> Skips all the way to the fucking Russian Revolution -> an entire fucking quarter of the year on, you guessed it, the Holocaust
10-11: The one actual quality history teacher I've ever had, she actually taught us American history all the way up to the Cold War, and from a global perspective, which was quite an achievement considering none of us had gotten past the Civil War before (besides the Holocaust). Also, Idk she was probably breaking the law here, but she actually skipped the Holocaust lesson because she knew we already knew it. God I miss her.

So yeah, this is why Americans don't know history, and why the only ones who know even a slight amount are autists who spend their time playing Paradox games. We spent 10 FUCKING YEARS on Colonial America and the Holocaust, but most students don't know the difference between the Axis and the Allies (beyond that one did the Holocaust).

In 7th grade, the English and History teachers collaborated for the WW2 unit. Basically, we had to write an essay on something WW2 related, and the grade we got on it counted for both classes. My mom's boyfriend at the time wrote the essay for me, the teacher found out I didn't write when it came to peer review, and I got a zero. I still passed English and History easily enough.

In 8th grade English, we read the Diary of Anne Frank, which took 2 or 3 weeks, I think. Then, the entire 8th grade class had an assembly with a speaker who was Holocaust survivor, or so he said. The shit I heard him say about his experience as a kid in Nazi Germany was unbelievable, like a Hollywood film that's supposedly based on a true story with some parts of it exaggerated for drama. The guy was also missing one of his thumbs, which he lost when disarming a mine sometime after he escaped Germany.

I'm an educator, and I can confirm that not only is this shit real and just awful, but it actively desensitizes students to these tragedies. I remember that when I was in school, we were genuinely sad and mournful the first couple of times we covered the Holocaust. Then we covered it again. And again. And again. By the eighth grade we became so sick of the Holocaust that we actively joked about it in private and mocked the stories involved.

Similarly, as I've seen in modern students, another trend like this has emerged with 9/11. For those non-burgers and those who haven't seen modern education, every year we cover 9/11 on its anniversary; the same tragic tapes, the same "never forget" slogans, the same "ask your parents where they were" assignments. At first it was effective, but eventually, kids became so overexposed to the thing that it became just another moment in history, like the Revolution or the Civil War. I'm recounting this because just recently, while I was supervising my third-grade students building with blocks, I actually heard them make fun of 9/11 and reenact it with their toys.

tldr; Less is more, and the inept boomer education system need to learn that already.

It was hell. I eventually nagged my parents enough that they gave me a ride to go pick up my own copy to read out of class. The bitch did the same thing with Macbeth, too.

In college, I also had a professor who tried to ruin Moby Dick for me by demanding we focus on the supposed racial commentary. I started out fucking loving it and he made it such a chore I stopped reading halfway through. I'll start it over again once the taste's out of my mouth.
