I cannot understand why so many publishers fail to understand the importance of a book cover. Yes, the words inside are of far greater value; but a good cover is the bait that reels the reader in. So, in appreciation, lets have a good/evocative cover thread.
I'll start with a fictional one which I feel is better than 90% of real covers. "Old Custer" by Eli Cash, from the Royal Tenenbaums (which I hated).

I also like covers that span the front and back of the book. This is from "The Vivisector" by Patrick White.

Thank you, I needed that pre-teen moment.

>absolutely nauseating and unbearably elegant

this is probably the best cover of any book ever, just momentarily hinted prepubescent vaginal lips, seen so briefly that you re-look, realize and consider the image and its context in terms of the novel.

The hardcover has a cherry cutout and the fist page is a collage of strange coloured drawings of young girls I presume.

Yes, that's one of the better covers I've seen. I've been resisting the urge to just go ahead and buy one of the editions of Lolita in my local bookstores, just so that I can buy that one from Amazon. Stupid Australia.

Dude, I loved the Royal Tenenbaums. I don't get how anyone could not like that movie. But on the subject of the thread, I like the covers of classic books that appeal to a specific group of people like pic related which was a cover by comic artist Jason.

I hate those new covers. Looks like the cover of some shitty romantic comedy movie.

This is what I have. And prefer. (Sans sticker, obviously.)

Yeah, I kind of got it from the image, but anyone who knows anything about the book will get the significance of that cover and feel that mix of disgust and reverence.

>> No.1338057

So the saying goes: "A picture says a thousand words." But when you have an 80,000 word novel and you have to either create or choose a picture to match it must get difficult. Also, I don't really care about covers. The best covers are leather/faux leather with a simple title.

I read a lot of classics, so most of their covers are usually just the title or a painting. I love these old Penguin books though.

YES. I fucking love these. All they need now is for Paul Pope to do a cover for 1984, Micheal Allred to do one for Brothers Karmakov, and Jim Lee to do one for Kavalier and Clay.

Great. A whole bunch of books that are too big to actually hold and read. Enjoy hunching over those while they sit on a table or somesuch.

That is assuming you have/are going to actually read them.
