A Place Called Skull, Book 2 of a (short) trilogy. I am liking it so far. I'll give it a review once I'm done with book 3.
I haven't read any chinkshit in maybe 2 weeks-ish? I finished Gebados and moved on to Fiend in Coiling Dragon. I read some litRPG that was so mediocre I won't bother naming it, and I finally finished Dungeon Born the other day, along with Where The Gods Gather (book 1 of that aforementioned trilogy).

The Fist Law is decent from the literary craftsmanship viewpoint, that is the author has sufficient grasp of English to express his ideas and the plot is always going somewhere, but the author's opinions on life, human condition and everything are retarded. Futhermore, the characters feel as if a bunch of hipsters who do not control their soi intake generated them for an RPG campaign where their characters are supposed to be brutal quasi-medieval assholes.

Malazan is just fucking bad. In this case the books being a novelization of an RPG campaign is a literal truth. And they are written as poorly as you can expect from an uncontrollably bloated modern fantasy "saga".

He's the man who coined the term 'Sword & Sorcery.' And I guess maybe Elric by Michael Moorcock even though I'm personally not a fan. Also if you want some modern Sword & Sorcery I'd suggest a book I just read called The Chronicles of Caylen-Tor by Byron Roberts. Does this "subvert expectations"? One of the reasons I loved Conan was how refreshingly simple and formulaic the stories are compared to modern fantasy.

No, son. It is the complete opposite. Even though it's "modern" in that he wrote it this year; it's 100% straight-forward Sword & Sorcery. And if you like it then you might wanna give The Snake-Man's Bane by Howie Bentley a shot even though he's not quite as good as Roberts and his writing can feel kinda amateurish and over-stuffed he also writes pure Sword & Sorcery. Both, which is due to the sheer scale of the story. You won't be able to see the big picture, how everything fits together, until you're very deep into the series, like 7 or 8 books deep in this 10 book series, and each book is 700+ pages. Moreover, Malazan doesn't hold your hand and ease you into the setting with lots of explanations, you're just dropped into the middle of events as they are happening and have to figure out stuff as you go. Characters will frequently reference places, people, events, and concepts you have no way to know about, but you'll just have to trust it'll make sense eventually and keep going, and you'll have to do that for book after book.

Generally you will know a little ways into book 1 if you have the patience to keep reading, people who don't like it rarely even finish book 1.

Ayy somebody else who read Shadowmarch. That's one of my favorite series by Tad and I shill it quite a lot in these threads, so glad to see somebody else has read it. When I was reading it and I realized those little blurbs at the start of the chapters were describing the same beings and same set of events but with different names and interpretations of things, I actually made a fucking web diagram to track who was related to who and what names they had. Really helped me put it all together.

So....it's a badly written bloated mess?

>> No.13369204

No, it's actually crafted very well, like a puzzle. Erickson is very careful to give out exactly enough information that your understanding gradually builds as you read the series, so that right as you near the climax of the series it all clicks and you finally understand everything. It's a great experience and very rewarding. The only part of the series that felt bloated and self indulgent was a long stretch of book 8, in that it didn't contribute a great deal to the story and mostly just served to pad out the novel. Generally everything Erickson includes in the books is important to some degree, but book 8 is the lone exception.

>Who better to fight back the darkness of the world than the one responsible for most of it?
>Daylen, once known as the Great Bastard, the Scourge of Nations, Dayless the Conqueror, has lived in hiding since his presumed death. Burdened by age and tremendous guilt, he thinks his life is coming to an end. Unbeknownst to him he’s about to embark on a journey towards redemption where his ruthless abilities might save the world. Many battles await with friends to be made and a past filled with countless crimes to confront, all the while trying to keep his true identity a secret.
>Indeed, it might be too much if not for the fabled power awaiting him.
>Everfall is a world of perpetual day where the continents float in an endless sky. If one jumps from the continent they will fall for many hours before returning to the same place from which they fell. Skyships rule the air powered by shining sunstone and industrial darkstone. A legendary order of knights bears mystical powers which they use to hunt out the dreaded Shade, monsters that regular people turn into if trapped in darkness for the length of a fall.
It is a world of enchanted swords, merciless monsters, mystical knights and hard magic, filled with tales of wonder and adventure.

To the person who asked about accelerando by Charles Stross last thread. It is ok-ish, just disjointed because it was originally just written for a magazine and it changes protagonists every couple of chapters or so. The ending is slightly disappointing in my opinion, the characters aren't very relatable or likeable. The writing tries too hard some times and kind of sounds very weird or odd. Also it drops terms and concepts but doesn't explain them so you kind of have to look them up. Its alright, not perfect.
