I don't use them too much but I have several handy. When I do read, I can easily remember page number/area I left off, and a re-read of surrounding pages when I pick something back up is good.

My favorite (though I never use it) is a big AKIRA bookmark which I got when when I bought a volume of the Dark Horse manga years ago. I have several from a local occult bookstore where I've picked up multiple Crowley books and a few other books of general bullshit/nonsense for personal amusement (fuck you, I Do What I Want). A few smaller red bookmarks from a local commie infoshop (purchases: Society of Spectacle, Grundrisse, Capital V.2). Other general bookstore ones that I got with purchases.

They are pure ornaments, but there they sit on top of the fridge, in a glass.. I use the smaller ones occasionally, but during work breaks I've taken to using small pieces of card-stock which come with the signage that we use. Use the available material, which will only otherwise become trash.

I respect your DIY craft but I disagree with the choice of a playing card as medium. A bookmark (if one even bothers using one to begin with) should be a tall-skinny thing, because that way it will tend to stay lodged in place even if the book is moved or bashed about a bit. A playing card covered with what looks like smooth tape is much more liable to easily fall out.

>> No.13357743

compared to amazon the main benefit is that they make books like 1cent cheaper, you get free bookmarks and, most importantly, you are more likely to get the exact edition you want (compared to amazon third parties) and I've never gotten a book get fucked up during shipping from them while that has happened a couple times with amazon

My local library sucks. Hardly any books, hard to find parking, filled with homeless people that aren't really there to read so they come talk to you, nowhere to sit by yourself. Like I don't have a problem with them being there but I'm not going to a library to chat. I want to find the most isolated corner and forget my surroundings entirely. Even if I just pick up books they usually don't have a copy so I've got to reserve it and get it sent from another branch, deal with parking, etc.
I also look up words I don't know and write their definitions in the book. Sometimes I'll have a thought and write it down but not that often.
I often buy books for $.50-4.00 at thrift stores. People are always buying classics and throwing them out unread.

>using a bookmark more than once

Why you swines do this?

Don't you know that you're passing all the dirt from one book to another?
Let me explain, say you put off your bookmark to continue to read (for what else, duh)
Then where you put it? Your unclean table? Over that oily paperback cover over your desk? Or maybe in your bag filled with all kind of shit. Then you proceed to return it to the Book, with all the dusk and dirty scraps of the surface you just take it from and you've just made it, you just irrevocably mark your book with the sign of dirtiness forever.

Now just think of those who have use the same bookmark for years, all the shit that you have bestowed to all your books from one to another like whores

I seriously hope you guys kill yourselves

In high school I used to make bookmarks out of lined paper. On one side, I'd write the title of the book and, whenever I found a page or a quote I liked, I'd write down the page number. On the other side, I'd usually design it based on whatever anime or manga I was also into at the time. I'd post them if I could find them, but it seems they've been lost for a few years now.

These days I either remember the page number or something around it, or I make sure to stop at significant moments (chapter breaks, character POV switches, etc.)

same. Book depository has pretty good bookmarks. Last book they delivered to me came with a 100 dollar wine coupon and a fistful of dirt. Still don't know what was up with that.

I do it to take notes in the book while reading and to reference back to at a later date, I usually write something up analyzing my thoughts on the book so having specific notes on specific quotes is nice.

Also when people come over I look smart lmao

I have many that I could be using at any given time: free ones they throw in the book being purchased at the bookstore, transit passes/cards from various cities I've visited, unique business cards from local artists, old polaroids... I have a stack I keep on my bookshelf and I usually grab whichever one fits the mood of the book I'm reading. That said, I generally only use them at home, as a lot of them hold sentimental value to me and I'd hate for them to get damaged or lost in some way while out and about. I generally always remember my page/chapter number, plus I can't help but crack the spine almost every page so softcovers will always open right up to where I left off. I do this so I can fold the cover around and read one-handed.

I use this Klimt one a lot that I got at the Musée d'Orsay while studying abroad in Paris in 2015.
