This isn't so unusual. Vitalists and Romantics have always been uneasy with Christianity's devaluation of the body and how its sanctification of suffering can quickly turn morbid. Basically he didn't like it because it was unfascistic. The Japanese religion of the time was largely a recent invention meant to serve nationalistic purposes, which it did very well, its later derivative is no less of an invention but it was heavily pacified post-ww2 much like everything Japanese. It's hard to alter Christianity in this way because of its nationlessness and supranational authorities. An inaccurate, modernist take on Germanic paganism, ethnic customs of Germany, would definitely be more than serviceable, actually it would work even if you were trying to be accurate and getting into the pagan worldview as much as possible. Much more so than ethnic customs of Japanese prior to their use in inventing a national religion, as they were not warlike in the least. Unlike Germanic paganism which is clearly the customs of merit-based warrior societies. The main issue with it is it promotes too much social individuality/ambition and religiously too much respect for fate and God (not Christian God), which is counter to the whole modern worldview including fascism. That doesn't mean they couldn't just use it for fuel to make a religion befitting fascism. Also, paganism believes in the same things that Christians identify with God, considering that 'God' in Christianity pretty much stopped being a God at least in polytheist terms, there'd be no issue with using God to refer to those underlying things in paganism just as many translators do when it comes to a variety of texts. This religion would discard the external authority on fascism, the church and Christian leaders, while offering a good alternative, could even render figures in Christianity as gods or heroes and shift them a little bit so they're more suitable for fascism, more suitable for loyalty to it, war, and struggle.
