I am looking forward to this winter break so very much for the simple fact that I will be able to read for FUN again for a while. What is everyone else looking forward to reading? And I'm not looking for snobby, everyone should read books, just the ones you haven't gotten around to yet but look interesting.

Pic related, started in September, but just haven't had the time to finish yet (even though only like 400 pages)

bump?

>> No.1332979

I read some of that book and it was pretty funny

>> No.1333258

I guess that counts as a pretty fun read. Not too much work involved to get through other than the fact that it seems a bit longer than it needs to be. I was just disappointed DFW didn't deal with Wittgenstein a bit more head-on.

I'll be massively busy over the Christmas period and as such I'll be relaxing with some fun / genre reads I've had on my shelf for a while - stuff like Use of Weapons, Sirens of Titan, Hogfather and others.

I really loved infinite jest.
How are you liking yours thus far?

>> No.1333313

i really liked infinite jest although i did not like broom of the system at all. bear in mind DFW wrote this while he was still an undergrad--and it shows, esp. with regard to his portrayal of the female characters.

So far so good, technically about halfway done
I'm a bit curious as to how the pineal gland/Wittgenstein plot line will pan out, although apparently it may not >>1333258

I kind of picked this up to see if I liked his writing style enough to try Infinite Jest someday.
It may be a stupid detail, but I'm really liking how, when something crazy happens, people observe it as crazy instead of completely normal, like many other authors do (Palahniuk comes to mind), like the guy with the blow up doll at dinner.
Anyway, I don't expect it to be my favorite book or anything, but I'm going to enjoy finishing it and moving on to my giant to-read pile

I've been meaning to read Sirens of Titan as well
but I'm not sure I really 'get' Vonnegut yet, honestly

You were looking for depth in BOTS? Jeez....

It's just a very funny, comic novel. Wish more people would trying to look for the DEEP in all Wallace's works.

I'm going to tackle the Wake.

I've got Cambell's (Skeleton Key) book to go along with it. Should be fun.

hello there casual, shallow reader. i look for depth and analyze everything i read.

and for pete's sake the philosophy of wittgenstein is a reoccurring theme.

Shit, the e/lit/es are here!

Because it's not as if the dick jokes and penis fixation aren't actually a majority of the novel.

I know, 'reading for enjoyment'? Whatever could that be?
If I don't have anything I can say afterwards to make myself sound like I know something no one else does, it wasn't worth my time

surely you aren't talking about teh opening of the book..?

I'm going to finish Murakami's Wind-up Bird Chronicles I never got started reading the third book due to it coming up towards assesments, but I'll be finished those by the winter break. If I have time I'll probably give infinite Jest the read it's been demanding. I tend to get distracted while reading it during the college year.

>>1335254

not really. i mean his portrayal of the females throughout as ditzy and annoying. i don't think it's done on purpose either--i think at 22 years of age, this was his honest perspective of women.

OK, I see where you're coming from. Lenore is an anime character.

Uh huh. And the men in the book?

Yeah, they were perfectly normal too, weren't they.

They were complete freaks and that's why they were funny

Thus DFW's viewpoint was that all men were freaks and women were ditzes?

well he was kind of a freak himself so I can see why he thought thta

yes, all men are perverted freaks who hoodwink the stupid, ditzy women into having sex with them. This is a biological fact of nature that has been scientifically proven.

Murakami, good stuff. It took me 3 or 4 of his books to get used to him, but totally worth it

I just acquired a few books from the sister of a friend. I'm going to spend the weeks building up to break on some Dostoyevsky and then, once break comes, I'll settle down into a few easy reads like Toni Morrison's Tar Baby, Perfume: the Story of a Murderer (was a good movie so I picked it up), The Prince and possibly Of Human Bondage. If I can, I'll find some more Vonnegut as well. I think I love that man -- when it comes to casual reading, at least.

>> No.1335736

I'm hoping to get through at least 10 or so books this break (mine lasts about a month). I know that when my school grants come in, I'll be buying a shitload more books, so I need to make a dent in my to-read pile first.

I doubt I'll be able to power through that many, but my to-read pile taunts me daily, I'd like to at least get through 5 or 6
