Hey /lit/,

We read the greatest literature of times gone by all the time. But what about today? Is there anything great which has been written recently?

>> No.1332868

No. I'm reading Tolkein because it's the best form of escapism.

um, since always? how in the fuck did you not figure it out? tao lin has been trolling /lit/ all this time and none of you fuckers even guessed

>> No.1332888

I was just wondering because sometimes I feel like some books are only great because they're old, and if written today they wouldn't be accepted as great.

>> No.1332889

John Dies at the End. Sure, it's retarded, but it also offers a good amount to think about. I'll argue it with a college professor any day.

Also Scott Pilgrim.

>> No.1332901

2666 by Roberto Bolano, Against the Day by Thomas Pynchon, and The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro all get a +1 from me.

The problem is that it takes time for the "canonization" process to weed out the great from the good/mediocre. Plus the fact that "great" books don't really come along all that often.

A million times this. Do you think if some doppelganger of Jane Austen or Dickens was writing today that their work would be hailed as literature? Fuck no, they'd be the Stephanie Meyers that /lit/ is always bitching about

dude, just go into a bookstore, take a copy of "shoplifting..." and read it. After 30 minutes you are through, its so laughably short.

ALso, you will be forever cured of wanting to read Tao Lin ever again.

THats how I did it, at least.
