All I know is, you're so nice;
you're the nicest thing I've seen.
I wish that we could, give it a go,
see if we could be something.

The glass was raised, the fired rose
The fullness of the wine, the dim last toasting
While at port, adieu or die

A choke of grief heart hardened I
Beyond belief, a broken man too tough to cry

Headlong little one into the wild unknown
with creatures and the cold night
Stay strong, the sounds of screaming's just a sacred rite
Of death begetting new life.

Lay me down on sacramenral ground
Lay me low in times of woe.

There's a road less travelled and a life less led.
It's the path between your spirits and the voice in your head.
We are here but for the grace of everything divine.
It's the providence we must find.

These two know how to write lyrics. Husband and wife from Rhode Island. Between them they know 11 instruments I think. Guy died from leukemia a couple years ago so their last album was recorded as he was doing chemo. Like a howl from hell.

And there's always a place for the angry young man
With his fist in the air and his head in the sand
And he's never been able to learn from mistakes
So he can't understand why his heart always breaks
But his honor is pure and his courage as well
And he's fair and he's true and he's boring as hell
And he'll go to the grave as an angry old man...

Já conheço os passos dessa estrada
Sei que não vai dar em nada
Seus segredos sei de cór
Já conheço as pedras do caminho
E sei também que ali sozinho
Eu vou ficar, tanto pior
O que é que eu posso contra o encanto
Desse amor que eu nego tanto
Evito tanto E que no entanto
Volta sempre a enfeitiçar
Com seus mesmos tristes velhos fatos
Que num álbum de retrato
Eu teimo em colecionar
Lá vou eu de novo como um tolo
Procurar o desconsolo
Que cansei de conhecer
Novos dias tristes, noites claras
Versos, cartas, minha cara
Ainda volto a lhe escrever
Pra lhe dizer que isso é pecado
Eu trago o peito tão marcado
De lembranças do passado
E você sabe a razão
Vou colecionar mais um soneto
Outro retrato em branco e preto
A maltratar meu coração

Rap has the best lyrics by far, it's strange that people still post white people indie bands when rap literally stands for 'rhythm and poetry' but I guess it shows you how deep racism is.

i like rap but most rap is talking, and OP said "songs", and i don't like most rappers that sing but why don't you post some rap lyrics you think are artful instead of your pointless retarded bullshit response fuck you i hope your asshole burns next time you crap out a post as banal as the one you assaulted my eyes with

he raps like there's no sense to be made,
he raps like the eldest sap of the Everglade
his raps move heat like thermostats adjusting centigrades.
he raps with the grace of an old man shining his grandson's shoes.
he raps like a master painter who's only choosing to use blues...
he reportedly raps in a dark apartment quarterly, wholeheartedly clutching the recorder to catch nuzzled portions of organs he'd been choking on.
when he raps, everyone everywhere is always electrified
and nobody would really mind if they were next to die.

Get get get get
Got got got got
Blood rush to my
Head lit hot lock
Poppin’ off the
Fuckin’ block knot
Clockin’ wrist slit
Watch bent thought bot
Tail pipe draggin’ volume blastin’ bailin’ out my brain
Red light flash
Dem stop I smash
Abraxas, hydroplane, massive
Catch this flight flow
Rainin’ madness
Mastered mine and laced
The ave with black cat fish tailin’ waves of stratus
Curb right ta far left lane
Don’t wait for me, if I care
Bout anything, anywhere
Losin’ myself, I get the stares
What I’m lookin’ at, wasn’t there
(Wasn’t there)
Nothin’ out there
Can’t stay inside
Hit the bar, sleep deprived
Who drove the car
I’m still alive
Up in smoke, moon was low
How’d you know
Didn’t say I did
Whose is this, you know what this is.. but do you know
Get get get get
Got got got got
Blood rush to my
Head lit hot lock
Poppin’ off the
Fuckin’ block knot
Clockin’ wrist slit
Watch bent thought bot
Fly inside out
Rot dem big shot simp slot shit but a one hit quick stop
So many ways
Ta skin the frame
Remember when
First got strange
Now I just think it life obey
So what comes next
Right away
(Right away)
Raise the cup, tilt it dry
Come black cloud
Cover the sky
Tongue thought pupil
Of your eye
Sickness moves you can’t deny
Lickin’ thought you mastermind
For mercy man cry
Yeah I’m knowin’ and
You know why
Nail thought mental
Ever dem try
Pigeon hole me get crucified
Can’t clone this edge
What’s it cost
To lose your head
Wit out end up lost
Should be askin’
Where’s the safe
Born wit a ski mask
On my face
Get get get get

Take me out tonight
Where there's music and there's people
And they're young and alive
Driving in your car
I never, never want to go home
Because I haven't got one
Anymore
Take me out tonight
Because I want to see people and I want to see life
Driving in your car
Oh, please don't drop me home
Because it's not my home, it's their home
And I'm welcome no more
And if a double decker bus
Crashes into us
To die by your side
Is such a heavenly way to die
And if a ten-tonne truck
Kills the both of us
To die by your side, well
The pleasure, the privilege is mine

I left my heart to the sappers round Khe Sanh
And the soul was sold with my cigarettes to the black market man
I've had the Vietnam cold turkey
From the ocean to the Silver City
And it's only other vets could understand
About the long forgotten dockside guarantees
How there were no V-day heroes in nineteen seventhy-three
How we sailed into Sydney Harbor
Saw an old friend but I couldn't kiss her
She was lined, and I was home to the lucky land
And she was like so many more from that time on
Their lives were all so empty, till they found their chosen one
And their legs were often open
But their minds were always closed
And their hearts were held in fast suburban chains

I was sitting in the Hollywood Hawaiian Hotel
I was staring in my empty coffee cup
I was thinking that the gypsy wasn't lyin'
All the salty margaritas in Los Angeles
I'm gonna drink 'em up
And if California slides into the ocean
Like the mystics and statistics say it will
I predict this motel will be standing until I pay my bill
Don't the sun look angry through the trees
Don't the trees look like crucified thieves
Don't you feel like Desperados under the eaves
Heaven help the one who leaves
Still waking up in the mornings with shaking hands
And I'm trying to find a girl who understands me
But except in dreams you're never really free
Don't the sun look angry at me
I was sitting in the Hollywood Hawaiian Hotel
I was listening to the air conditioner hum
It went mmm...
Look away

Ain't my job to fuck you on your birthday anymore
Ain't my job to fuck you on your birthday

Right under my nose thinking I'm so Colonel Klink oblivious
But how could I not see you got off scot-free 'cause I know this means it

Ain't my job to fuck you on your birthday
Ain't my job to fuck you on your birthday anymore

When roughly translated even your naked truth means squat and what's more
I'm missing you like a hijacked flight on September 11th
I don't know who got on you but I'm not wrong in thanking them since it

Ain't my job to fuck you on your birthday
Ain't my job to fuck you on your birthday anymore
Ain't my job to fuck you on your birthday
Ain't my job to fuck you on your birthday anymore

Maybe it ain't your birthday but then again
Ya know I wouldn't give a fuck
When what I shoulda got is over ya sooner so now
I'm just gonna wrap it up

Maybe it ain't your birthday but then again
Ya know I wouldn't give a fuck
When what I shoulda got is over ya sooner so now

(Ain't my job )
I'm just gonna wrap it up
(to fuck you on your birthday)
I'm just gonna wrap it up
(Ain't my job )
I'm just gonna wrap it up
(To fuck you on your birthday anymore)
I'm just gonna wrap it up
(Ain't my job )
I'm just gonna wrap it up

A heart on the run keeps a hand on the gun
You can't trust anyone
I was so sure what I needed was more
Tried to shoot out the sun
Days when we raged, we flew off the page
Such damage was done
But I made it through, 'cause somebody knew
I was meant for someone
So girl, leave your boots by the bed
We ain't leaving this room
Till someone needs medical help
Or the magnolias bloom
It's cold in this house and I ain't going out to chop wood
So cover me up and know you're enough
To use me for good
Put your faith to the test when I tore off your dress
In Richmond on high
But I sobered up and I swore off that stuff
Forever this time
And the old lover's sing
"I thought it'd be me who helped him get home"
But home was a dream
One I'd never seen till you came along
So girl, hang your dress up to dry
We ain't leaving this room
Till Percy Priest breaks open wide
And the river runs through
And carries this house on the stones
Like a piece of driftwood
Cover me up and know you're enough
To use me for good
So girl, leave your boots by the bed
We ain't leaving this room
Till someone needs medical help
Or the magnolias bloom
It's cold in this house and I ain't going out to chop wood
So cover me up and know you're enough
To use me for good
Cover me up and know you're enough
To use me for good

God, that's just insane
But a love without a life

And I wish I could change, but I'll probably just stay the same
And I wish you could see the Lord

Where our world falls to pieces

and the moonlight starts to hide,

in a million little splinters,

in the corners of our mind.
Where endless colors

they are swallowed by the sun,

in a trail full of echoes,

just before they had begun.
And fountains full of flowers,

on islands full of tears.

Weeping willows and fireworks

explode then disappear.
You believe what you see,

all the things that you know.

But oh, you don't know

the depth of my soul.
Karma's just a key,

unlocking every gate.

Eyes are just mirrors

putting us to our fate.
The sound of hello,

like a light to the blind,

sending us on a spiral,

through a world of goodbyes.
All the truth that we crave

its our fruitless parade,

in a circus of our shadows

where we play our charades.
You believe what you see

all the things that you know.

But oh you don't know

the depth of my soul

But I refuse their generous hands
Though I am a taker, an opportunist
I've got longings no offer can stand
Take a good look here
Marble at this stunner of a being so profound
He must be our saviour
The second coming
He has come here to waltz around
I don't care whose house is on fire
As long as I can warm myself at the blaze
Of burning furnish, cherished photographs

Oh
Oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh
Yeah
You have so many relationships in this life
Only one or two will last
You go through all the pain and strife
Then you turn your back and they're gone so fast
Oh yeah
And they're gone so fast, yeah
Oh, so hold on the ones who really care
In the end they'll be the only ones there
And when you get old and start losing your hair
Can you tell me who will still care?
Can you tell me who will still care?
Oh care

Ba du bop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop

Mmmbop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop
Ba du, yeah-e-yeah
Said oh yeah
In an mmmbop they're gone
Yeah yeah
Plant a seed, plant a flower, plant a rose
You can plant any one of those
Keep planting to find out which one grows
It's a secret no one knows
It's a secret no one knows
Oh, no one knows

Ba du bop, ba duba dop

Ba duba dop ba do, yeah yeah
Mmm bop, ba duba dop ba do bop
Ba duba dop ba do bop
Ba duba dop ba do, yeah yeah
Can you tell me? Oh
No, you can't 'cause you don't know
Can you tell me? Oh yeah
You say you can but you don't know
Can you tell me? Oh (which flower's going to grow?)
No, you can't, but you don't know
Can you tell me? (if it's going to be a daisy or a rose?)
You say you can but you don't know
Say you can but you don't know
You don't know how, you don't know how
Mmmbop, duba
Du bop, du
Yeah, yeah
Mmmbop oh yeah duba

Wasted and wounded, it ain't what the moon did
Got what I paid for now
See ya tomorrow, hey Frank can I borrow
A couple of bucks from you?
To go waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda
You'll go a waltzing Matilda with me

I'm an innocent victim of a blinded alley
And tired of all these soldiers here
No one speaks English and everything's broken
And my Stacys are soaking wet
To go waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda
You'll go a waltzing Matilda with me

Now the dogs are barking and the taxi cab's parking
A lot they can do for me
I begged you to stab me, you tore my shirt open
And I'm down on my knees tonight
Old Bushmill's I staggered, you buried the dagger
Your silhouette window light
To go waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda
You'll go a waltzing Matilda with me

Now I lost my Saint Christopher now that I've kissed her
And the one-armed bandit knows
And the maverick Chinaman and the cold-blooded signs
And the girls down by the strip-tease shows
Go, waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda
You'll go a waltzing Matilda with me

No, I don't want your sympathy
The fugitives say that the streets aren't for dreaming now
Manslaughter dragnets and the ghosts that sell memories
They want a piece of the action anyhow
Go, waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda
You'll go a waltzing Matilda with me

And you can ask any sailor and the keys from the jailor
And the old men in wheelchairs know
That Matilda's the defendant, she killed about a hundred
And she follows wherever you may go
Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda
You'll go a waltzing Matilda with me

And it's a battered old suitcase to a hotel someplace
And a wound that will never heal
No prima donna, the perfume is on
An old shirt that is stained with blood and whiskey
And goodnight to the street sweepers
The night watchman flame keepers and goodnight to Matilda too

omorrow soon turns into yesterday. Everything we see just fades away. There's sky and sand where mountains used to be. Time drops by a second to eternity. It doesn't matter if we turn to dust; Turn and turn and turn we must! I guess I'll see you dancin' in the ruins tonight! Dancin' in the ruins! Guess I'll see you dancin' in the ruins tonight! There's laughter where I used to see your tears. It's all done with mirrors, have no fears. There's nothing pure or sacred in our time. The nights we spent together are no crime. It doesn't matter if we turn to dust; Turn and turn and turn we must! I guess I'll see you dancin' in the ruins tonight! Dancin' in the ruins! Guess I'll see you dancin' in the ruins tonight! Like marble statues always flowing lay, From castles built in silence, let us play. Even though our skulls rot in our flesh. We can build a laser, tear the mesh. It doesn't matter if we turn to dust; Turn and turn and turn we must. I guess I'll see you dancin' in the ruins tonight! Dancin' in the ruins! Guess I'll see you dancin' in the ruins tonight! Your day breaks, your mind aches
You find that all the words of kindness linger on
When she no longer needs you
She wakes up, she makes up
She takes her time and doesn't feel she has to hurry
She no longer needs you
And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years!
You want her, you need her
And yet you don't believe her when she says her love is dead
You think she needs you
And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years!
You stay home, she goes out
She says that long ago she knew someone but now he's gone
She doesn't need him
Your day breaks, your mind aches
There will be times when all the things she said will fill your head
You won't forget her
And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years!

Ticking away the moments that make up the dull day
Fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your hometown
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way
Tired of lyin' in the sunshine, stayin' home to watch the rain
You are young an' life is long an' there is time to kill today
An' then, one day, you find, ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the startin' gun

And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath, and one day closer to death
Every year is gettin' shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hangin' on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over, thought I'd somethin' more to say

Home, home again
I like to be here when I can
An' when I come home cold and tired
It's good to warm my bones beside the fire
Far away across the field
The tollin' of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spells

I am the son
And the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
Of nothing in particular
You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does
I am the son
And the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
Of nothing in particular

How can you say

You could meet somebody who really loves you
So you go and you stand on your own
And you leave on your own
And you go home and you cry
And you want to die
When you say it's gonna happen "now"
When exactly do you mean?
See I've already waited too long
And all my hope is gone
You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way?
I am human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does

She can kill with a smile
She can wound with her eyes
She can ruin your faith with her casual lies
And she only reveals what she wants you to see
She hides like a child
But she's always a woman to me

She can lead you to love
She can take you or leave you
She can ask for the truth
But she'll never believe you
And she'll take what you give her as long as it's free
Yeah, she steals like a thief
But she's always a woman to me

Oh, she takes care of herself
She can wait if she wants
She's ahead of her time
Oh, and she never gives out
And she never gives in
She just changes her mind

She will promise you more
Than the Garden of Eden
Then she'll carelessly cut you
And laugh while you're bleedin'
But she'll bring out the best
And the worst you can be
Blame it all on yourself
Cause she's always a woman to me

Oh, she takes care of herself
She can wait if she wants
She's ahead of her time
Oh, and she never gives out
And she never gives in
She just changes her mind

She is frequently kind
And she's suddenly cruel
She can do as she pleases
She's nobody's fool
But she can't be convicted
She's earned her degree
And the most she will do
Is throw shadows at you
But she's always a woman to me

Sondheim is the king of lyrics.

"Losing My Mind"
The sun comes up - I think about you
The coffee cup - I think about you
I want you so, it's like I'm losing my mind
The morning ends - I think about you
I talk to friends and think about you
And do they know it's like I'm losing my mind?
All afternoon doing every little chore
The thought of you stays bright
Sometimes I stand in the middle of the floor
Not going left - not going right
I dim the lights and think about you
Spend sleepless nights to think about you
You said you loved me, or were you just being kind?
Or am I losing my mind?

"Everybody Ought to Have a Maid"
Everybody ought to have a maid
Someone who's efficient and reliable
Obedient and pliable,
And quieter than a mouse
Oh, oh, wouldn't she be so nimble,
Fiddling with her thimble
Mending her gown
Oh, oh, wouldn't she be delightful
Cleaning up
Leaning down

"I Wish I Could Forget You"
A love as pure as breath, as permanent as death.
Implacable as stone
A love that, like a knife, has cut into a life
I wanted left alone.

The car's on fire and there's no driver at the wheel
And the sewers are all muddied with a thousand lonely suicides
And a dark wind blows

The government is corrupt
And we're on so many drugs
With the radio on and the curtains drawn

We're trapped in the belly of this horrible machine
And the machine is bleeding to death

The sun has fallen down
And the billboards are all leering
And the flags are all dead at the top of their poles

It went like this:

The buildings tumbled in on themselves
Mothers clutching babies picked through the rubble
And pulled out their hair

The skyline was beautiful on fire
All twisted metal stretching upwards
Everything washed in a thin orange haze

I said: "Kiss me, you're beautiful -
These are truly the last days"

You grabbed my hand and we fell into it
Like a daydream or a fever

We woke up one morning and fell a little further down -
For sure it's the valley of death

I open up my wallet
And it's full of blood

Girls will be boys, and boys will be girls
It's a mixed-up, muddled-up, shook-up world
Except for Lola, lo lo lo lo Lola
Well I left home just a week before
And I've never ever kissed a woman before
But Lola smiled and took me by the hand
And said, "Little boy, gonna make you a man"
Well I'm not the world's most masculine man
But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man
And so is Lola
Lo lo lo lo Lola, lo lo lo lo Lola

Bate outra vez
Com esperanças o meu coração
Pois já vai terminando o verão
Enfim

Volto ao jardim
Com a certeza que devo chorar
Pois bem sei que não queres voltar
Para mim

Queixo-me às rosas
Mas que bobagem
As rosas não falam
Simplesmente as rosas exalam
O perfume que roubam de ti, ai

Devias vir
Para ver os meus olhos tristonhos
E, quem sabe, sonhavas meus sonhos
Por fim

In the land of abhorations
through the Versian mountains
birthplace of the Gutspawn nation
their evil king's a bloated creation
stomach with a mouth liquefying crematorium
He ingests the dead for incubation
in the gut starts the deformation
in his swollen innards the creatures go through
a twisted genesis to be born anew

vomited up
grotesque mass
ill contorted
body parts

If their mutated misanthropomorphic form survives
they owe fealty to their father
the detached womb of hell
now a vessel to the king of defiled flesh
allegiance to the army
a child of the gut

In older times an order arose
the vanquishers of chaos came to dispose
the lord and his children
and their appetite for carrion
armor and swords facing
exoskeleton, tentacle and claw

The instrument to kill the creator demon
was an ancient blessed weapon called the spear of Gan
the spear was lost for thousands of years
the knights sought council with the sage in stone
they found him weeping imprisoned in rock
for a stroke of mercy the spear shall be yours
it's in the rotting mountain
and eldritch giant beast
forever decaying in the subarctic ice

Crusade to
unholy land
swallowed up
by destiny

Through the cavernous mouth they entered
into a tunnel like digestive tract
the temperature rose in the hollows
seeing worms as thick as trees
there was the spear
held by the maggot god
warriors yelled their war cry
let your sons bore into you

Their banner on the spear
the mighty host entered the Gutspawn pits
past vaults of the dead
they marched in groaning silence

Steel flashed
visors down
abattoirs made
battles begun

Through the brutal assault wading through the gore
the spearman went the Gut he stood before
before he could strike the mouth ejected spittle
bathed in acid screaming without a throat
the hero on his knees threw the spear
his arm went with it eaten at the socket
he want down halved at the shoulders
but the spear struck home
in the volumous belly

Vomited up
grotesque mass
ill contorted
bodily parts

Atrophied limbs flailed in agony
gaping mouth splattering blood
croaking and wheezing dying in seconds
vile blubber shuddering in anguish
watches his empire crumble
through rolling blistering eyes
then it explodes starting a cave in
killing all but the world survives

Ain't it just like the night to play tricks when you're tryin' to be so quiet?
We sit here stranded, though we're all doin' our best to deny it
And Louise holds a handful of rain, temptin' you to defy it
Lights flicker from the opposite loft
In this room the heat pipes just cough
The country music station plays soft
But there's nothing, really nothing to turn off
Just Louise and her lover so entwined
And these visions of Johanna that conquer my mind

You really can't get much better than Dylan. I don't think he should have gotten the Nobel Prize but there are really only like 4 or 5 others in his league as a lyricist and none have the legacy that he does.

Gonna post some kino verses from the few others I consider to be in Dylan's league.

His fingernails, I see they're broken,
his ships they're all on fire.
The moneylender's lovely little daughter
ah, she's eaten, she's eaten with desire.
She spies him through the glasses
from the pawnshops of her wicked father.
She hails him with a microphone
that some poor singer, just like me, had to leave her.
She tempts him with a clarinet,
she waves a Nazi dagger.

She finds him lying in a heap;
she wants to be his woman.
He says, "Yes, I might go to sleep
but kindly leave, leave the future,
leave it open."
He stands where it is steep,
oh I guess he thinks that he's the very first one,
his hand upon his leather belt now
like it was the wheel of some big ocean liner.

I'm the young city bandit, hold myself down single-handed
For murder raps, I kick my thoughts alone, get remanded
Born alone, die alone, no crew to keep my crown or throne
I'm deep by sound alone, caved inside, 1, 000 miles from home
I need a new nigga for this black cloud to follow
Cause while it's over me it's too dark to see tomorrow
Trying to maintain, I flip, fill the clip to the tip
Picturing my peeps, now the income make my heartbeat skip
And I'm amped up, they locked the champ up, even my brain's in handcuffs
Headed for Indiana, stabbing women like the Phantom
The crew is lamping, Big Willie-style
Check the chip-toothed smile, plus I profile wild
Stash through the flock wools, burning dollars to light my stove
Walk the blocks with a bop, checking dames, plus the games
People play, bust the problems of the world today

"I was driving across the burning desert
When I spotted six jet planes
Leaving six white vapor trails across the bleak terrain
It was the hexagram of the heavens
it was the strings of my guitar
Amelia, it was just a false alarm

The drone of flying engines
Is a song so wild and blue
It scrambles time and seasons if it gets through to you
Then your life becomes a travelogue
Of picture-post-card-charms
Amelia, it was just a false alarm

People will tell you where they've gone
They'll tell you where to go
But till you get there yourself you never really know
Where some have found their paradise
Others just come to harm
Oh Amelia, it was just a false alarm"

And so the holy trinity of Dylan, Cohen, and Mitchell is complete. Literally any contemporary songwriters worth a shit are built off of the work of one or all of those three.

There's gonna be some trouble
A whole house will need re-building
And everyone I love in the house
Will recline on an analyst's couch quite soon
Your father cracks a joke
And in the usual way
Empties the room

Tell all of my friends
I don't have too many
Just some rain-coated lovers' puny brothers
Dallow, Spicer, Pinkie, Cubitt
Rush to danger
Wind up nowhere
Patric Doonan, raised to wait
I'm tired again, I've tried again, and

Now my heart is full
Now my heart is full
And I just can't explain
So I won't even try to

Dallow, Spicer, Pinkie, Cubitt
Every jammy Stressford poet
Loafing oafs in all-night chemists
Loafing oafs in all-night chemists
Underact, express depression
Ah, but Bunnie I loved you
I was tired again
I've tried again, and

Now my heart is full
Now my heart is full
And I just can't explain
So I won't even try to

Could you pass by?
Could you pass by?
Could you pass by?
Could you pass by?
Could you pass by?
Oh

Now my heart is full
Now my heart is full
And I just can't explain

So so
So so so so so

And the two people in pic related I think are the best we've gotten since the aforementioned songwriters. They've actually managed to build off the work of those that came before rather than just cheaply imitating, though both in very different ways. Bill of course is far more laconic, and has taken Cohen's modernist sensibilities even further:

"The wind is pushing the clouds along
Out of sight.
A power is putting them away.
A power that moves things
neurotically.
Like a widow with a rosary.

Everything is awing and tired of praise
The mountains don't need
my accolades.
Spring looks bad lately anyway.
Like death warmed over.

And the bantam is preening madly.
waiting for the light of day."

And of course Joanna takes Dylan and Mitchell's decadence and control of language to almost absurd levels. Her sincerity makes it work though.

He said,
"It's alright, and it's all over now," and boarded the plane,
his belt unfastened, (The boy was known to show unusual daring—
and called a 'boy', this alderman confounding Tammany Hall,
in whose employ King Tamanend himself preceded John’s fall!)

So we all raise a standard
to which the wise and honest soul may repair;
to which a hunter, a hundred years from now, may look, and despair, and see with wonder the tributes we have left to rust in the park:
swearing that our hair stood on end,
to see John Purroy Mitchel depart
for the Western Front,
where work might count.
All exeunt! All go out!
Await the hunter, to decipher the stone
(and what lies under, now).
The city is gone.

I once knew a man
Been everywhere in the world
Gave me a tiny ivory ball
Said it would bring me good
Never believed it would until
I have been loving you

Dear old man
He'd seen most everything
Gave me a piece of good advice
Said it would do me well
I couldn't really tell until
I have been loving you

Now it seems
Things are not so strange
I can see more clearly
Suddenly I've found my way
I know the old man would laugh
He spoke of love's sweeter days
And in his eloquent way
I think he was speaking of you
You are so lovely
You didn't have to say a thing

But I remember that old man
Telling me he'd seen the light
Gave me a small brown leather book
Insisted that he was right
I only heard him slightly
'Til I heard you whisper
Took you up all in my arms

Dear old man
Wise old man
Fine old man, now

Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves
In labyrinths of coral caves
The echo of a distant time
Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine

And no-one showed us to the land
And no-one knows the where or whys
But something stirs and something tries
And starts to climb towards the light

Strangers passing in the street
By chance two separate glances meet
And I am you and what I see is me
And do IAnd lead you through the land

Inviting and inciting me to rise
