People are gonna praise or criticise this just because the "villain" is a Jew. But it's a lot more nuanced than that, and the first couple times I saw it, I felt bad for Shylock and thought Antonio was a douchebag.

Shylock is a fence sitter. If he really cares about justice, he should get out of the money lending business, because there's no justice there. If he really wants to stay in business, he should fully embrace The Art of the Deal and cash in his double penalty.

It's kind of unfair that he has to make that decision in the first place, but life fortunately isn't fair and we all have to cope with it somehow.

I recommend the movie version with Al Pacino.
