I wish her novel Night and Day was a meme here. She hadn't found her voice yet, but it's still a solid novel that happens to be /lit/ as fuck. Just read it and see what I mean.

A degenerate atheist sexual inverted, her "books", if you can give such demonic poison that name, should be fuel for the fire.

>published after Ulysses and all of Joyce's previous work
>takes place entirely on one day
>in a capital city
>with tons of stream of consciousness
>ends with 'main character' finding out about someone committing suicide and thinking about life and death and human companionship and suffering
>"N-no, of course I don't like you Joyce! I didn't even finish Ulysses, b-baka!"

Only american men do this, normal male human beings are capable of feeling emulation, which is when you admire and respect someone for being better than you and this motivates you to improve yourself without taking anything away from him.
The american is only capable of envy for the successfull because he is inherently weakminded, hedonistic, and lacking any sense of what a good life actually is.

not him but I'm an American man and while it's not true of all of us he's got the gist of it honestly. not that I agree that it's exclusive to us and europeans are all comrades who love to see each other flourish but it's definitely more prevalent here. mostly boomers and their kids behave this way, the younger generations seem to be more empathetic but they're still kids so it'll take time to tell

It's not necessary. You can see it in their art. They imitate and steal instead of trying to create something original.

on the topic of Woolf's deep cuts, the first chapter of Jacob's Room is fucking sublime. the rest is an unintelligible mess that did nothing but prepare me for the sound and the fury, but the first chapter is God-tier

I was in university for an exchange and the general culture between both professors and students was to shit on those who are better than you instead of trying to get like them. While I was studying in Europe I befriended people who were better then me because I thought I could learn a great deal from them. Americans fear and shun people who are better than them and they rarely approach people who are better for fear of feeling inferior and "losing" some sort of imaginary competition. I can understand envy between academics because they are known to be a whiny race of man and womenchildren in search for head-pats and good grades past the age that's acceptable, but it was absolutely disgusting to see completely joyless 19 year olds wanting nothing more then see their peers fail at whatever they do, instead of trying to learn anything from them to improve their own chance of success.
The astonishing thing is that even on the lowest level of society, were you are supposed to stick together with your peers or at least feel empathy for people who are as poor and miserable as you, people kept acting like that and shitting on each other. I had conversations with people from black and latino neighborhood and they were absolutely seething with hate for other miserable people in slightly better conditions, doesn't matter whether the difference was irrelevant if seen from outside. Whoever is slightly in front of you in whatever race people are running in america is an enemy.
