Because the right wing is conservative, meaning they want to conserve what is, as opposed to creating something new. They want to keep their money, keep their faith, keep their family, keep their country. When your ideological goal is to stagnate or move backwards, the public isn’t going to see you as intelligent or a genius because you aren’t bringing any new ideas to the table, and if you are they are new strategic ideas to keep what you have. More a procedural intelligence than a material one. The concepts don’t change or grow, they stagnate. And so they have to paint their ideas as radically different to garner any traction, which leads to people seeing them as “wacky”.

Look, both the left and right inherit most of their thought from a certain number of thinkers who are in turn decided upon by certain social authorities. The authorities differ based on which side of the spectrum you're talking about, but the fact of the matter is that there's a hierarchy of thinkers, followed by interpreters/distributors of thought, followed by people who don't actually think. In most cases, the most "essentially" right or left wing person will be the one who thinks the least, but the left wing at least alleges to value creativity and independence, while the right mostly doesn't, hence right wingers disavowing their own thinkers for being "weird".
