That statement may be misleading rather than outright wrong. There absolutely have been Hindu movements that did not present the idea that the gods are ultimately manifestations of an all-encompassing essence. When someone claims that Hinduism is polytheistic, they are like doing so in ignorance of the major philosophical/theological strains which reconcile the apparent polytheism into a kind of monotheism, but to state that "Hinduism is monotheistic" would also be misleading.
